I think I'll give it a go! I've been looking for inspiration, and this seems like a good start!:D Only one question: when you say rendering engine, do you mean like V-Ray or no V-Ray, or graphics card, or what? Thanks for the challenge!! Oh, and one more question; where do I submit my entry or entries? Thanks!!

I've started a new thread to post questions about rules etc. You can use whatever rendering engine (preferably TS I suppose) or 2d program that you like.
You can post your images here. Just look at prior contests and you'll get the idea. |

This is the place to talk about the latest contest and clarify rules etc.
I went with the idea for a chess model as it's basically a 3d classic, and you can go for simplicity or full-blown character design if you like. Hopefully this will give something for everyone to sink their teeth into. It might also give the rendering gurus an excuse to play with cool shaders and caustics etc.
I suppose as a general guideline I could add that the model would ideally be designed so that it would work on a real chess board. It should ideally fit within the confines of a cuboid starting at the base so that it could live happily with other pieces, if you get my drift.
This is just my 2c, if your vision of chess is more abstract then just go for it. |

Thanks, but it being my very first attempt at anything non humanoid I don't think it's going to scare anyone off. Prodigy doesn't seem too upset;) |

Nice Jack! I tried the rook too, but failed miserably... I think I tried too hard. TrueSpace crashing every 15 minutes didn't help either, then it did something else weird, but idk. It was tougher than I thought it would be...

Jack,
I hope you don't mind me asking but as someone new to VRay rendering, how do you get the glass to come out like that. I always seem to have little artifacts in them. I keep getting it looking like the attached image - The lighting was all wrong when I rendered this but any pointers would be great... |

Could it be just your rendering quality? (I don't own V-Ray, so if it's a problem with that I wouldn't be able to help you)

Thanks guys! :)
I'm attaching the material I used. Adaptive Anti-aliasing helps a lot. Also I used an HDRI image for lighting this time. Hadn't done that before so wanted to try it out.

@ Jack - Beautiful render, very nice work. This image really shows Vray's potential. Aside from the sexy features Vray produces very lush renders with an almost indefinable quality about them. I'm very happy I bought that upgrade. Nice composition on this image as well.
@ Brother X - The dying King, surrounded by evil pawns, it kind of invokes images of Caesar. You've turned a mundane setting with simple objects and managed to give it some emotional impact - this is exactly what I was hoping for, well done.
I really like what I've seen so far. I was a bit worried my idea would be a dud, but I think the entries so far have already justified it. :D |

I wasn't cracking the whip, I'm busy too. Sorry if it came across that way. :o
If the deadline needs to be extended I would be cool with that. |

Transient, thanks for the comment. The model jack produced was what I was aiming for with the king but I just couldn't get the texture right...It's my first proper model with VRay so I guess I just have to learn it.
I need to experiment more with the HDRI stuff I think... |

I thanked Jack for his V-ray help and provided a link there... let me look..
Click this link (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3097)
It's where Jack helped me learn a good deal about V-ray. read through it, brotherx and it should give you some pointers. |

In my case, I'm just letting ideas bubble through my brain; a chess set was one of the first things I created back years ago when I first started learning 3D, so I want to make a piece (or pieces) that are a bit stylistically different than what I did before.
(For those curious, my earlier chessboard can be seen here in glass (http://www.darnbeagles.com/images/3d/Chessboard.jpg) or here in wood (http://www.darnbeagles.com/images/3d/Chessboard2.jpg)). |

I was doing a bit of research on planets this afternoon, and came across a picture called chess-planet. I just had to do my own version, so I guess this is one of those rare times I made two entries for the contest. |

I just wanted to take a second and say great work everyone! I'm spending every spare moment on a personal project, so no time for speed modeling for the next month.
By the way, I really have to get vray!

Prodigy did the WHOLE CHESS SET!? You must drink a lot of Coffee!:D
It does look fantastic using the realtime render.
Matter of fact all the entries so far look great! Going to be another tough choice this week.
I'll be in the Mountains fishing this week so I wish you all the best!:) |
