tS Speed model challenge #15 "Chess Piece"
_________________________________________
Hopefully this challenge will inspire the same creativity as the last. I chose this object because it has enough leeway to suit users of different levels of experience. Even if you only know how to use the lathe tool you can still have a go, so please enter and have some fun! :)
Objective:
Model any type of Chess Piece in under 2 hours.
The rules:
1. Create the model in the specified time.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you and can include as many copies of the object as you wish.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough.
Time limit - 120 minutes
Deadline - 11:00 PM EST, Wednesday, June 27, 2007 (4:00 AM GMT, Thursday June 28, 2007)
Subject - Chess Piece

I will edit this image with the time etc, but I wanted to be the first to get a shot up. My first horse and chess piece BTW.
the time was around 117 minutes I think, I've got it all captured to video and will release it for free on scatteredpixel.com.
EDIT: the time was a bit longer, Here is my entry(please excuse the un-proffesional scene and render)
BTW: the video is up on my site for those who want to watch....it's free. |

Model time:
Pawn: 20 minutes (using nurbs in model side of TS7.51)
King: 5 minutes (in workspace using extrusion)
Board: 30 minutes
Puddle: 5 minutes
Lighting: 5 minutes
Textures: about an hour with experimentation
Rendering: 12 minutes using VRay. I did one that took nearly 2 hours but it was rubbish. I want to post a better render at some point.
EDIT: posted a render with different textures - model is exactly the same and I changed some lighting. about 15 minutes experimenting and render time of about 10 minutes. |

With special thanks to Jack in my Larking About Thread (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3097&page=3) A good place for new V-Ray people to learn a bit.
I decided to do a molded Lucite Bishop for this one.
I drew a path and used lathe to make the piece, then cut out the miter on top. Then I used object intersection to make the mold line that all molded pieces have. Then I added the cork bottom so they wouldn't slip on the smooth board. :D
I needed to get this one in today because Uru has a new chapter this weekend.
Time spent modeling: 93 min
(The frame was harder than the chess piece.)

Well, here is mine at last.....I'm not sure what chess piece this could be used as really....maybe it's one of those universal pieces you use when someone has lost one of the pieces.

@ ProfessorKhaos ! Realy stylish future design. Good Idea.
@ Blackhawk ! wow i like it much but it would look much more better without the glassocket. You can make the different between the game color on the roof. |

Nice approach Blackhawk. BTW, just a name or in the military. I just got out. |

All right, here's my entry: A king and a rook. Both created primarily through the lathe tool, with an object swept and cut out to form the "notches" in the top of the rook, and a few obvious primitives boolean unioned in.
Modelling time: 34 minutes.
Texturing: 15 minutes, mostly fiddling with different Vray textures. I clearly need to try reading the manual on the subject of Vray renders.
Rendering: About 8 minutes.

I don't think it's the shading so much as the lighting. try to delete all the lights, then add a single spot for shadows...after that you could add back lights and stuff. |

Well, glad to see I'm not the only one taking the 'Castle' alternate approach to the Rook... vaguely based on Minas Tirith (if it isn't obvious)
TS version 5.1
modelling approx 1hr 50mins
textures/lighting approx 45 mins
render approx 2mins
No SDS - just polys, sweeps/lathes, primitives and booleans etc - just a lot of them.

First things first - I'm sure I took longer than 2 hours for the modelling due to stop/starts and other interuptions and I didn't keep an accurate eye on the clock... :o I did this on the weekend but this thing called life has kept me away from finalising it until now...
I used a reference pic of a rook from google images (again!) as the basis for this one and took a long time experimenting with vray shaders to get the metal finish - I'm still not sure about it but need to post this and go to bed :)
The base is a displacement mapped sphere and a bit of soft paint brush to flatten the underside with a bump map added (ts\textures\crumpledpaper 2.tga). The towers are bump mapped with ts\textures\stone-bump.jpg
There are some truly excellent models in this challenge and it's gonna be another tough vote!
Cheers, Blakeo. |

I don't mind if I am - being honest here. I just wanted to post the final thing as I was quite happy with it :)
If Mr Transient wants to leave me out of the vote that's OK with me. :o |

I don't mind, at least you were honest. ;) It might count against you when people vote, but that's not up to me.
It's a great model nonetheless. |

A very good model indeed. Change the setting a bit and make it an outdoor scene. Then enter it into the monthly gallery. should be worth that. It's very well done. |

Did anyone here watch my video? I get quite ...uhh stupid with anger, it makes me forget how to use tools and such. If you did let me know if you enjoyed it and maybe I can do one for the next challenge.
When does the voting start? |

Thanks.
I think I might try that... I wasn't thinking to take this beyond the challenge but my mind is racing with possibilities now :D |
