tS Speed model challenge #14 "Insect"
_________________________________________

Alright here's one we all can go creative on. The topic is insect! Up to you what kind of bug you want to make, heck maybe we'll even see some Insect-Mechs! :D And when you're done with that feel free to crawl or skitter on over to the animation challenge and breath some life into the little bugger... :p

Objective:
Model any type of Insect in under 2 hours.

The rules:
1. Create the model in the specified time.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you and can include as many copies of the object as you wish.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough.

Time limit - 120 minutes
Deadline - 11:00 PM EST, Monday, June 11, 2007 (4:00 AM GMT, Tuesday June 12,2007)
Subject - Insect

Sheesh... I can't believe I'm the first one to post a bug...oops, insect (sorry) :D

The beetle started as a cylinder and was made using loops and extrusions in TS 7.5 workspace. The jar also started life as a cylinder and was made with loops. I then took it to the modeller side and used boolean shell with thickness and offset to hollow it out. I used the same process as Prodigy describes here (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2692) to put the dirt in the jar.

The beetle took about an hour and the jar with the dirt took about 20 minutes. Lighting is the default from workspace.

I made a roley-poley...or as y'all over in the UK call it, a "pill bug".

His shell is painted like a planet earth. Now if only I could get him to bounce! :D

a) time spent = 1 hour 50 min

took 20 min to make the alpha texture.

5 min to make the body of the butterfly and make it and the wings one object.

2 min to copy it 6 more times.

3 min to build the alpha channel

2 min to make the sphere and texture it

25 min to position the models

All the rest of the time was spent getting my V-ray settings right, so I guess that doesn’t count.

a.1) model time total = 12 min. ;)

b) Truespace 7.5

c) V-ray render engine

I was caught between doing a butterfly or a dragonfly, but I don't think I could do a dragonfly in 2 hours. Not enough examples on my pc at this time.

Modelling Time: 2 hours

UV map: Blender

Textures: Gimp, photo (background)

Rendered in Vray with dof.

I'm not entirely happy with it, but it was a great learning experience, and gave me an excuse to play with vray settings. Vray's really cool.

I love the real-time update of saved textures in the workspace - great time saver. I also give the thumbs up to the soft selection brush, which saved my ass when I started running out of time with this bug.:)

I also like the luuv .obj plugin. Import/export to blender was completely painless.

Well this has been my favourite SMC yet - possibly because I actually had time to spend time, if that makes sense...

Mech-scorpion:

- TS version 5.1

- Modelling time - the full two hours, had to stop myself as could happily have spent longer (wanted to add a few more finishing touches and later parts suffered from the rush a little)

- Scene setting, props, lighting and texturing - another hour and a half to two hours probably.

- Rendering - about 2 mins at 4x AA

Actually used some SDS for a change, but as you can see, it's something I need more work on!

Modeling time: 2 hours

Rendering Vray(GI) 5 min 45 sec 2xAA

I also love the new PE toolset and with the Dimension tool set you get precise control of editing that easy to use.

Here's my dragonfly...

tS Version: 7.5
Rendering Engine: Lightworks
Modeling Time: 90mins
Shading/Texturing: 5mins
Rendering: too long.....about 1.5 hours..because I had to shove the hdri samples up very high so that the shadows from the transparency maps showed up.

After all these great images from all other I feel a bit intimidated when I release my not so great image.

However, I can at least blaim that I am a newbie (this is my first attempt ever to make a model of something living).

This started out as a Lady bird, or lady bug (not sure which is correct, I have seen both names) but turned out to look nothing like it. Now I don't know what kind of insect it is, but it looks a bit like some kind of beetle.

Truespace 6.6

Model time = 1 h 20 min (about)

Render time = not sure, but not much

Texture = 15 minutes after giving up in TS 7.5 where I tried to make the render and texture first.

Render engine = lighworks

OK finally got another SMC under the belt - and just in time.

This is a model of a Potter Wasp modelled from a reference pic found with google images. Didn't have time to get the antenna or the wings done though! (spooklly, tS crashed almost exactly 2hrs after I began - a new built in Speed Model 'feature'? :p )

Didn't have time to texture it so it's a chrome killer mech potter wasp!

The whole thing was modelled in workspace using just cylinders and the normal sweep tool.

Model time : 2 hrs

Scene setting : another 20-30 mins

Modeled in : 7.5, workspace only.

Renderer: VRay 1.5, with HDRI, GI, DOF. took roughly 25(ish) mins

The final render was despeckled in Photoshop to get rid of DOF noise.
