'Cool' topic Ed. Let me be the first to say what a 'fan'tastic idea!:o

Life is like a fan - when you're in front it's a breeze, when you're behind it sucks.

I decided to do two entries... same fan, but once with V-ray (my very first V-ray render) and once with Lightworks. :D

Good Job Kena,

I think the lightworks render looks better, but that might be to your lack of experience with Vray (man I wish I had Vray!). I was thinking of doing a hand fan too for my non-entry. My father had one from Korea or Japan (I can't remember where he said he got it) that was made of ivory and looked very much like your model.

W!zard,
Good wind farm there. And I say if it looks like a fan and moves like a fan, then it's a fan :D

Took me a while - I'm not used to texturing. I wanted to add a backdrop but I don't have time just now and wanted to get in an entry.
Anyway...

Title: USB Fan
Model time for fan = 45 minutes
Texturing =45 minutes
Lighting=30 seconds.
Total. 90.5 minutes
Lightwave render = 2 seconds.
TS 7.5

EDIT: See later entry.

brotherx,

Your USB fan looks like a very good start, but with it head-on, you cannot see the fan housing. Might want to angle it a bit to see that part.

If you don't have one, just plug a cylinder on the back large enough to give room for the works, or a rounded cone for that retro look.

Yeah, it's just a cylinder at the back....nothing fancy, with the support coming out of the middle of it. I didn't know what else to do...

I got the idea from those little USB fans you get with the foam blades.

Just the cylinder would be ok - it's just that right now, it looks like a flat circle behind there - an angled view would show the cylinder and make the fan look more 3-d

Am just posting a better version. It has a wooden surface which makes a difference and a better angle.

Was just thinking that it would be easier to follow/judge the entries if updates to the entries are done just by editing existing posts with the new image instead of making new posts. Just note in the entry that it was updated and the date. Posting here to let people know it was updated so they can go look at it again probably wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Nice job transient!

I was going to do a case fan but I decide that all those connectors looked like too much work. ;)

If you post your VRay settings maybe I can help you sort out the render. Don't think I've ever seen a result like that, pretty cool in a western style old photo sorta way. ;)

Thanks :)

I was trying to replicate the lighting setup from this (http://cg-india.com/Tutorials/V-Ray/3dsMax_tutorial_SL_01.html) tutorial.

Unfortunately scaling the area lights seems to degrade the quality. I've re-rendered it with normal-scale lights and it's much better, but I'm still getting noise in the shadows.

[edit] Figured out what was going on in this (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3116) thread.

Glad you figured it out transient. :) I was going to write and say that it had to be the area light density because the settings looked realy good, except for the QMC depth of 3 which is too low for that kind of bounced light set up. Probably 5 or 6 would be adequate.

I finally got my render done. TS fought with me on it though. In the end, I had to give up on the reflective caustics. At first I was running out of ram, then after lowering the settings got the caustics map saved out, but realized it was gonna take like a week to render...:p

Ah well. I've got an idea for a sort of bar scene from this so I might turn it into a project. ;)

Sorry I didn't get a chance to enter this one, time just wasn't on my side. However, reviewing the entries again before casting my vote I noticed this in transient's post: "The black part took a couple of hours including learning time. The faceplate bit took a lot longer" - the time limit is 2hrs and while this is an informal compy and resonably flexible this indicates that it went well over, yet it is still included in the judging poll?

I don't want to cause any trouble but I do want to see a degree of fairness.

Okay troublemaker (just joking:) )

Transient, was your total modeling time well over two hours? While there is some flexibility, we do need to keep to within the guidelines, but at the same time, not take away from the fun and education of the challenge. This is an honor system contest since there is no real prize, and there is no way to monitor time. Not much can be done about it now, but everyone in the future please try to stick to the guidelines.

Thanks www for catching that. I missed it.

The main black part took less than two hours. I was having fun so I just went ahead and finessed it a bit afterwards with a faceplate.

I think I made that pretty clear, but people may have judged it on the whole thing I guess.

I don't mind being disqualified - it's just a forum challenge.
