tS Speed model challenge #13 "Fan"
_________________________________________
I think this one has lots of possibilities. Lets see what everyone can come up with.
Objective:
Model any type of Fan in under 2 hours.
The rules:
1. Create the model in the specified time.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you and can include as many copies of the object as you wish.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough.
Time limit - 120 minutes
Deadline - 9:00 PM EST, Thursday, May 24, 2007 (1:00 AM GMT, Friday May 25,2007)
Subject - Fan
Good luck and lets see LOTS of entries and LOTS of votes!!! |

38 minutes to design
1 hour to texture
My first V-ray render
TS7.5
V-ray
25 min 37 seconds to render
I used an image mask to get the holes in the fan. It is a copy of a wooden fan one of my co-workers have at work. I think it is laser cut, so let's call it
Laser-cut V-ray.
This is the wireframe

Well heres something for the challenge - I was going to do an electric desk fan but settled for a wind farm instead! Hopefully close enough to the theme....
I hour 40 mins for the modelling - still getting used to tS 7.5 obviously :D texture, posing and setting scene maybe an hour
Rendered in about forty seconds using LightWorks. |

38 minutes to design
10 minutes to texture
TS7.5
Lightworks
8 seconds to render
I used an image mask to get the holes in the fan.
Add 3 minutes to fix the fact that I turned of shadows on one of the infinate lights.
Let's call this
Laser-cut Lightworks fixed.
Redid the Wireframe by zooming out so you can see more of it

Very Rare for me... A second entry.
Many People in the Southern U.S.A. will recognize this one. Perhaps it has spread to other countries. In the churches, they used to give out, or allow you to purchase for a small price, a paper fan with a wooden handle because the churches were not cooled.
So:
Model time for fan = 10 min
Model time for Pews = 20 min
Model time for rug, floor and rugpin = 5 min
Texturing = 25 min
Lightwave render = 5 seconds.
TS 7.5

Here's mine.
The black part took a couple of hours including learning time. The faceplate bit took a lot longer, but I made a ton of mistakes.
Not sure why the render's so dirty, maybe it's my lighting setup. I'm still coming to grips with vray and I'll figure it out eventually.
[edit]: I've uploaded a better beauty render. Thanks to Bobbins and Burisman for the tips. |

I need to fix the ceiling bump and re-render at 800x600, hopefully I'll get a chance before the thread closes.
Edit2:
Ok here's the final, enjoy:

NB - apologies, forgot my wireframe in the rush to leave the office last night. Will try to get one up later today but TS hangs everytime I open the scene this morning - too many polys I think! (File is about 15MB - I've done bigger but it always gets sluggish)
It's only polys anyway, no SDS, so there's not that much to see.
N
(edit: here we go, at last... 173,000 polys, would have been more if I'd had time to finish - adding power cable etc, probably just as well for my pc that I didn't!) |
