Objective: to model a firearm of your choosing in under 2 hours, Be as creative as you like, can be your own design.

Rules:

1. Create the model in the specified time.

2. You may enter as many times as you like.

3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grap before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and perhaps learn a few things (this does not have to be incorporated into the final rendered image, if you feel your wireframe needs to be large so that people can understand it better then post a seperate wireframe).

4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.

5. Post only one image (and 1 wireframe if you like) per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you and can include as many copies of the object as you wish. Composition can include other objects but the main focus should be on the object specified by the challenge title.

6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.

Again, winners are encourage to produce a tutorial on how the created their winning piece. I will see what I can put together in the next little while.

Time limit - 120 minutes

Deadline - 6.00 PM G.M.T. Saturday 14th of April 2007

Subject - Firearms

All right, managed to create something in just under 2 hours. Using 6.6 now, thanks to the pre-order offer for 7.5.

Now all we need is Duck Dodgers to be targetted....

Here's my entry - Mini Toy Raygun

Now I know this is a speed model challenge but I seem to spend a whole day doing these damn things :) ! I did loads of experiments in the best way to model the gun grip and have it blending with the body - I eventually settled on a nurbs sphere, dragged points to form a grip and then added patch loops (if that's what they're called) which I refined. Sounds easy now but to get to that point took many hours and many other tried methods. The dial, fins and trigger are polys and everything else was nurbs but converted to polys before I took the wireframe, sorry.

I see this as good learning opportunity for me... which I guess is one of the main intentions of this challenge anyway.

So this final model took less than 2 hours in itself. I'm just not counting the experimental hours! :D

I also tried to add some DoF with Photoshop CS2 but the Lightworks Depth map didn't quite match the V-Ray render :( (any ideas why anyone?) so there's a bit of dodgy blurring here and there...

Originally I was going to model Zat gun (or Zat'nik'tel) from the tv series Stargate SG-1 but then I released that organic modeling was a lot more difficult than I thought and I ended up with something that looked more like a squashed snake than a Zat :D Oh well, just need more practive

So here's mine - The Ion Gun

tS Version: 7.5beta
Rendering Engine: VRay 1.5
Modeling Time: 1hour 45mins

Ha, the guns are getting bigger and bigger!

Here's mine; was going to do a revolver, but didn't seem much point after Prodigy's awesome pair. This is my modified take on a Necron Gauss Flayer (from Warhammer) without any proper references. Not entirely happy with the fnial result but I can't spare any more time as my lunch break at work is over...

modelling time 45mins (yesterday's lunch break)

lighting/texturing/rendering about 45mins (today's lunch break!)

TS version 5 (I do envy all you Vray users with your nice lights and metals...!)

Only SDS was to the handgrip... rest is simple enough.

(edit - oops, wrong wireframe, changed now...)

When this topic was first suggested I got all 'greeny' on it and thought - I don't like firearms and believe that violence is never the most effective solution to anything - although obviously there are plenty of people who somehow think that killing someone who does not agree with your point of view somehow makes your point of view more valid.

Anyway, I was inspired by the creativity shown in the way you folk interpreted this theme and decided to venture down from the lofty heights of moral superiority and have a go at this challenge.

In my country hand guns are illegal - end of story. Even the police here are usually unarmed. Firearms are usually hunting rifles and to my mind are pretty unsporting - it would be a different thing if the defenceless animals could shoot back!

Having said all that when I was a young boy I was .... well, a boy! Thus I got a vicarious thrill out of the sense of power one derives from possessing superior weaponery, like any other kid. Here's my rendition of our weapon of choice, usually used to inflict pain on defenceless empty tin cans and old bottles!! It's the closest thing I've ever had to a firearm.;)

trueSpace 7.11

Modelling time 45 mins

All up 1 hour.

Here's mine. Power slingshot like I used to have when I was a kid. Straight forward extrusions with SDS on the handle and a little on the elastics.
