Objective: to model some kind of calculator in under 2 hours, it doesn't have to be the typical plastic digital calculator.....be abstract if you like.

Rules:
1. Create the model in the specified time.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grap before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and perhaps learn a few things (this does not have to be incorporated into the final rendered image, if you feel your wireframe needs to be large so that people can understand it better then post a seperate wireframe).
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one image (and 1 wireframe if you like) per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you and can include as many copies of the object as you wish. Composition can include other objects but the main focus should be on the object specified by the challenge title.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.

Again, winners are encourage to produce a tutorial on how the created their winning piece. I will be sometime soon ;)

Time limit - 120 minutes
Deadline - 6.00 PM G.M.T. Saturday 24th of March 2007

I saw the first calculator, and figured I would callculate the same number of 647890

When I was a lad in school, they tought us how to calculate with an Abacus, so there ya go.

Model time 48 min

Render time 2 min (aprox)

4895

This wirefram shows what I used.

cylinders for the posts and moulding

planes for the floor and walls

cubes for the abacus frame and table top

Modified a cube for the legs

The beads are made from the torus - used the handles to flatten the top and make the center smaller.

Here is my entry for the calculator speed model challenge. For those who haven't seen one of these befeore it's a sliderule. We were taught how to use sliderules at school until the powers that be allowed the use of electronic calculators.

I remember one teacher would challenge the kids to come up with answers faster on electronic calculators than he could using a sliderule.

Modeling time for Sliderule - 15 mins. Pencil -2 minutes notepad. Around 25 minutes.

Texturing took longer than modelling at just over 48 minutes.

Well folks, knew I wouldn't be able to work fast enough to make one of those high-fangled scientific calculators so I decided to go the other way... let's just say Norm would be proud! :D

P.K.

Forgot to state modelling/texturing/rendering time...

Version - trueSpace 7.11

Modelling - a few seconds shy of 2 hrs (as much as I could do, last 5 min spent on solar panel)

Texturing - about 30 min

Rendering - 10 min (high antialias settings)

Nothing too fancy here, just your average run of the mill free calculator with a new checking account. TS 5, model time 1 hr 30 min. Render time 25 seconds.

Needed a forum calculator:

Modelling - trueSpace 7.11,

1h (mainly because I ran into problems

I didn't expect - with glass and subtracting)

Render Engine - LightWorks

Textures from my own library, maybe 2min

to choose the color scheme for teh calc and

postwork in Paint Shop Pro X - whopping

3min ...

Darts score calc. No idea if these exist or not but seemed like a good idea (wish I'd had one when I used to play, would have saved having to learn maths!!)

Ok, Finally managed to complete this one!

Modelling took so long (it's only planes and cubes, really!) because tS kept being funny with fillet tool which I was using for the first time ...

The decals and textures are photos I took from the real thing so it's a really basic model when you look closely :D

The LCD screen is a quad-divided plane with shaders for the black bits :)
