Loads of scope with this easy one so no excuses for not having a go!

Objective:

to model a clock in under 2 hours, type of clock is left up to you - that's right, ANY type of clock or timepiece is fine.

The rules:

1. Create the model in the specified time.

2. You may enter as many times as you like.

3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.

4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.

5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you and can include as many copies of the object as you wish.

6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.

Time limit - 120 minutes

Deadline - 23:59 GMT Tuesday 6 February 2007

Subject - Clock

Good luck everyone

... it is not cheating! It keeps time; no batteries; no winding; and pretty accurate if you set them right.

It is too a clock!

Well ... that's my submission and I'm sticking to it.

model time = 50 min
texturing = about 6 different tried formulas for weathered brass and about 2 hours
rendering = lightning fast!
Render engine????? ... if I change the oil will it go faster?
all trueSpace 6.6

Just wondering, are we supposed to be displaying our modeling prowes or the ability to create a quick, pleasing composition?

I agree 3dpdk, it is TOO a clock.

here is my pitiful entry:

Name - Town Clock

Model time - 52 min

Texturing = stock textures (UV mapping was a bit hard on the cylinders)

Rendering time = 10 seconds (hey! I have a fast processor, ok?)

Render engine = Truespace 7.11

If it's a pleasing composition, then you got it all over me.

Still, I think I did pretty good for a duffer.

:jumpy:

shading\lighting = 45 mins

rendering = 4 mins

Render engine = Lightworks

From my understanding, it's primarily the modeling that is the challenge, but a nice composition wouldn't hurt.

Ok, it's not entirely "showey" but it does have a functional display...

about 2 hours of fidgeting to get this thing cobbled together. Not my most efficient work. Started over at one point and in the end I ran short of time to do refinements.

Makes use of my dot matrix display with transparency applied to any "on" pixels. Inner light actually projects the time on the wall. Kinda distorted given the angle I had chosen. That's what I get for half measures... thought it would make a great ceiling clock.

Threw in a glass table top to reflect the projected image as other points of view seemed awkward and didn't really put the clock on center stage. Shoulda spent a few moments rounding some of the sharp corners on the glass and the clock, but oh well. It was fun anyway :D

Done in trueSpace 7.1, rendered with lightworks.

P.K.

vizu, that's cool.. is it based on a real object? If so, how does it work? If it's an invention of yours......how does it work? :)

Not as much as the one that comes with a wardrobe, though barbie clothes are cheaper these days I suppose :)

It's an equatorial sundial. The pointer is adjusted to point at the north celestial pole (roughly speaking the north star) by turning the base and adjusting the slide mount on the stand for the proper latitude. The goal is to have the plane containing the numbers parallel with the Earth's equator. Once set it remains fairly accurate throughout the year within about +/- 15 minutes.

http://www.mysundial.ca/tsp/equatorial_sundial.html

The reason it can get off by so many minutes has to do with the fact that the earth rotates at a fairly constant rate but it orbits the sun in a slightly eliptical orbit, thus the sun leads/lags a constant 24 hour interval over the course of a year.

Now you know way more than you wanted to!!!! :)

Here's my mantle clock.

Modeling: 1hr 50mins

Texturing, rendering: I have no idea how long. Had some serious problems with the glass, and seeing the face behind it. You can see a bit of the bevels at the edge of it. I'd have to guess at about two hours. Rendered in 7.11 HDRI.

Enjoy!

Oops, I just noticed that my numbers weren't rotated properly. Hopefully this won't count against me since it was a texturing issue :) Here are the numbers of the face in their proper place.

Enjoy!

I was going to say, Ed, that it must be one of those novelty clocks that keep accurate time but cause a cognitive disconnect... ;)

Of course you didn't have time to finish it, it is a stop watch after all.
