Objective, to model a knife in under 2 hours, type of knife is left up to you.
OK so here are the rules.
1. Create the model in the specified time.
2, You may enter as many times as you like.
3, Your entry should include a wireframe screen grap before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and perhaps learn a few things.
4. Include time spent, Truespace version, Render Engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you and can include as many copies of the object as you wish.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
Time limit - 120 minutes
Deadline - 12.00 AM G.M.T. Wednesday 15th of November 2006
Subject - Knife
Cheers,
Steve |

Here's my first attempt at one of these challenges:
TS version: 5.1 SP2
render engine: ? default for TS5...
Modelling time: about 40mins
Texturing/lighting/composing: approx 30mins
Rendering: negligible
Post-process etc: none (could maybe do with some DOF?)
Comments/crits welcome as this is my first go at 'speed modelling' - stuck with simple/basic tools so no SDS here...
(edit - replaced wireframe version with better quality screen capture) |

Yes, it was called NURBS then though - I think it was tS6.6 where they were renamed and "proper" NURBS were introduced. That might be causing the confusion :)
HTH!

Hey you 2, if you have time to post, you have time to model a knife.:p
Nice job Nez, looks like a USMC toad stabber.:p:D
The knife catagory is pretty open so people can do anything from a butter
knife to a sword. |

Just managed to fit in doing this after our annoying powercut. I know the texturing and rendering is poor, but there you go. Oh and it uses standard HDRI lighting, nothing special. |

Lol, here's my first entry, maybe I'll do a serious one later, there's no pre sds wireframe because there is no sds:p
Model time-7 min
Render time-5 min
Ttexture time-10 min |

TS 5.1 has SDS..
Sorry for the confusion - I know it has, I just chose not to use it as I didn't think I needed it in this case (which is handy as I'm only just starting to try it out so have some way to go getting comfortable with it).
So, to clarify, my wireframe isn't 'pre-SDS', it's just the final model.
Nice job Nez, looks like a USMC toad stabber. Thanks - that's the basic idea, vaguely K.A.Bar type job... |

Hemulin, that is a pretty brutal looking knife (brutal as in dangerous, not technique :) )
and because I'm a picky bugger I have to point out that I believe Tom is thinking of TS4 when SDS was called NURBS...5 was first version to have SDS and "real" NURBS. |

Yes, version 5 does specifically have a 'subdivision object' tool - can't remember what there was in my version 4.3 as it's a long time since I used it.
Decided to do another one for fun - lunchbreak at work is just the right sort of time frame to have quick tinker at something like this.
Cleaver:
TS version/renderer: as above (5.1 SP2)
Modelling: 20mins (used SDS on the handle this time, see wireframe below, showing handle object before SDS and subsequent booleans)
Texturing/lighting: 20mins - pretty much all texturing - haven't exactly gone sophisticated with the lighting! :D First time I've really tried using layered materials - looks like lots of fun to be had there...
Rendering - 1 minute
hemulin - I like your knife - some kind of ceremonial dagger? |

Hemulin, that is a pretty brutal looking knife (brutal as in dangerous, not technique :) ). Alas it is not original, it is just a cheap model of a Klingon knife (Startrek) - it would look good if i had more time to sort it out properly. |

Nice job hemulin, good looking shapes. That's sort of the idea behind a speed
challenge, you don't get much time to sort it out.:p Generally, you find new
ways to do things when you have a time limit, same thing with working on a
structured project.
Brian, that's an original Idea! Maybe you can get a Font named after it,
Swiss Army Bold.:) |

I see we are off to a good start, good work everybody, Swiss army bold is a good one. Hopefully I will have some time in the next day or 2 to create something. |

Cool render Prodigy
I own 6.6 and I will like to know more about V-Ray time rendering.
I know u use it a lot but can u tell me more about it and if V-Ray use multi threading and multi core CPU.
Thanks

I think there is already a thread about that somewhere......try searching. If not just create a new thread asking that. ;) |

A very quick reply: yes, VRay is multi threading.
Also, LightWorks is multi threading (but almost all 3rd party shaders for it are not) and VirtuaLight is not multi threading. |

wireframe, Vray its the most amazing...
Are very very fast.. and the quality its incredible.. You must render.. and render... and setup.. to know how Vray works.. when you know that parameters.. you can run like a guabitt.. jejeje
If you think the GI spend to much time?? its not.. this render have GI.. Planar light.. Have on the ground fresnell reflection.. and all this render on 800X600 with X3 Antialasing.. and it tooks less than 6 min..
If you can Buy TS7 + Vray.. Doit my friend.. 100% recomended...
BTW.. Yes.. HyperThreadin is support and i think Multicore too.. Icrease about 25% on render speed.. |

I must be a little psychic, because when I said butter knife, I thought of you.
But I must admit, I didn't see the direction you would take it.:):) |

Hey this is going along great! Glad to see the challenges are continuing. My wireless router died and I finally found time to replace it so between renovating three bathrooms and a kitchen I'm gonna have to find time to model up something. :)

This was inspired by an African style knife that was hand crafted and engraved:
TS version: 7.11
render engine: Lightworks with IBL lighting
render time: 5 min
Modelling time: 75 minutes
Texturing: 30 minutes

That looks good e-graffit! Nice textures!
Nice job Jack! Rendering and textureing isn't included in the time so
if you want to you can post a render.
Thanks to all who entered!
Lets keep it growing folks, the more who enter
the more ideas and techiiques we all get to see.:)
Now I have to figure out how to set up a poll. |
