Does anyone know if the AMD Phenom 9500 or 9600 is causing a rendering slowdown when using the glass shader in tS 4-7? I am wondering if the bug in those processor models is causing my problem...

I'll explain what I am having difficulty with. I am rendering a scene that has a few objects using the glass shader; now my quad-core cpu is running at 100% until it hits the first pixel that contains the glass, then tS drops down to an average of 75% cpu usage. Now, I know that there is something wrong when my single core machine next to it is now rendering the same scene faster then my quad-core (My quad-core is running at 2.2 GHz, while my single-core is at 2.1 GHz). I have tested rendering the scene in tS 5.2, the demo of 6.6, and the demo of 7.51, (all on my quad-core) and they all have the same problem once they hit the glass shader. However, I have only tried the demo of tS 6.6 on my older single core machine.

Anyone have an explanation, or even an opinion to support or reject my hypothesis?

I'm unsure if the other versions will handle multi-thread.

But in 7.51, click on the check box to engage multi-thread ( see image after right clicking on the render icon)

You could try turning off the tlb fix in your bios. It's notorious for slowdowns like this.

tS 4 through 7 all have multi-threading abilities and it is something I keep checked by default on all of my machines....

Also, I am starting to notice one other curious problem.... I am continuing to work on the same scene, and I am noticing that my quad-core machine is also struggling far more with ffaa then my single-core.....

This is what I was wondering, because the Phenom 9500 and 9600 just use a bios and/or software workaround, which is not supposed to affect most users. But then most users don't produce 3d artwork and run their machines with constant processing for 7 hours straight...:D

If I can find a way to disable the workaround and it fixes this, I will post it out here and I would recommend anyone to think wisely about grabbing the "fixed" 9550 and 9650 models (which were just released), before purchasing a probably discounted "patched" model....

I checked my bios and I'm not sure I even have the tlb patch. After reading through both AMD and ASUS forums, it sounds like the initial release of the bios didn't include it, which would explain why I couldn't find it anywhere in the bios...

Because of this, I guess I am back to square one...

Just for reference to anyone checking this out, I am using an ASUS M3A motherboard with the initial release 301 bios version.

On checking resource monitor, does one of your cores stop doing anything?

I tested on my Core 2 Duo and Xeon Quad Core, and in both cases (just a scene with some regular spheres and glass spheres, at 4X AA to slow it down) all CPU cores went to 100% and stayed there (and overall CPU monitoring showed 100%).

Also to confirm, this was the Glass shader with default settings rendered under Lightworks in a default scene (so default light set up).

HTH!

My apologies about not getting back to you sooner, but I have been preoccupied with getting my last few weeks of high school over with...

This link: http://stewmaster44.googlepages.com/Cup1.scl.zip will give you every scene that I have created from the start of this project... However, I only noticed this problem in the last 10 or 15 saved scenes...

I don't know if I was having the problem before it or not...

Because I made incremental saves, "newscene57" is the scene that I know for a fact I am having trouble with and has been the exact version of the scene under discussion...

I probably wont be able to respond until June... but I will try...

Thanks for all your help!

I started playing around with the scene to see what has been causing the problem, and so far, I know that the problem only occurs in the scene when ray tracing is enabled... I'll get back with more details...
