I own:

- TrueSpace 7.51, gamePak, conversionPak 2.1

And I want to import textured, animated 3rd party models into TrueSpace 7.51's workspace side.

Since there is still no Collada importer - or .X importer for that matter - on the workspace side, I suppose my best bet is using the gamePak/conversionPak importers residing on the model side.

And so I did with several models in .X format; those models are imported and displayed gracefully with animation intact in tools like Deep Exploration, for example. But they won't come gracefully into TrueSpace's workspace side :-(

Is there a way at all today to get such an import task as described above accomplished ?

The best format for import and export of models is currently the OBJ format. This preserves geometry, textures, and UV maps. The LUUV plugin is the way to go for that (provided free in the install of all copies of tS).

However it does not import animation. Depends on what kind of animation you mean. If skeletal, the best bet is an OBJ of the geometry and a BVH of the skeletal stuff, which you can reattach in tS.

If you mean other forms of animation, then X format is the best bet. It is hard to work with though, has many flavors and variations, so is tricky to both import and export succesfully - you may need to try many combinations of settings in both packages, making quite a large number of possible combinations, and even then it might simply not work. X format just isn't very tidy to work with.

Consideration continues to be given to export / import formats as work continues on the software, its an important area we agree.

HTH!

Hello Tom !

Thanks for clarifying this ! Using BVH + OBJ is definitely a viable option to consider in many cases ! I am however not very confident with regard to the LUUV plugin anymore ... Please load the OBJ file "BunnyAnimated.obj" from the attached zip file via LUUV into TrueSpace 7.51; at least in my environment the Bunny appears with one displaced leg ... Not so in Deep Exploration for the same OBJ file ...

As always I am grateful for feedback !

Tschüss

The bunny loaded up fine via the LUUV plug-in in trueSpace 7.51 model side for me.

Also tried two other 3D programs and it loaded fine as well.

Even tried loading the bunny in Photoshop CS3 Extended as seen below. Everything appears to be in order.

Loads ok here, no leg appears displaced. tS7.51, new scene, modeler, open plugin LUUV, click LUUV icon, select the OBJ, and this was what I got.

Took it a moment or two to return to being responsive as it converted the model. Can you post what you see?

Cool model btw!

Thanks!

Tom

I suppose this erroneous import behaviour is due to LUUV import settings; which I have changed via right clicking the LUUV plugin icon: When deactivating "Preserve groups" under import options, the bunny comes in fine; when activating that grouping option, grouping is imported; which considerably prolongues importing and at last perturbates the bunny a little ...

If You can import the bunny successfully with grouping using LUUV, then I have to investigate my environment ...

Thanks and Tschüss

You can always break down the object into groups after it is imported using the decompose into object tool.

It doesn't always preserve the names, but at least you have access to individual objects which makes it easier to uv and texture.

I just tried it out of curiosity and yup, works perfectly.

It does come through untextured if you use the TS6 Files ->Load options. I saw this before and had forgotten about the LUUV plugin.
