I have used truespace since 6.5 and recently start using 7.51 (with vray).

Now I have a couple of questions about Workspace versus Model side...

Am I correct that Workspace is the new foundation on wich new tools are being developed? Hence Workspace will be te future for Truespace?

What is the use of realtime modelling and colaboration...I dont get it! eeek

Model side is the 'old' engine and has all the 'old' full toolset comparible to 6.5?

Will model side eventually be abandonded?

What is Caligari's view on offline-rendering? Will this be the core business or the whole realtime hype?

Why are some tools available on Workspace and not in Model such as displacement brush etc...will this be occuring more often in the future?

Hair and cloth-motion only in workspace?

1 Yes

2 Ask somebody else ^^

3 Yes. Plus a few more features like HDRI, a second render engine etc. minus a few finally broken things like bones system minus a few new introduced bugs.

4 It IS abandoned. No more further development.

5 No clue

6 That is development. TS 6.6 simply didn't have displacement brush.

7 There is a stoneold and very limited hair plugin that runs even in TS 3, and there is a cloth plugin for 6.6. But these plugins will not be developed anymore. And are even hard to find nowadays.

The real-time rendering thing basically allows you to use the power of your graphics card along with directx to render in real-time and generating files can take seconds per frame as opposed to renderers like VRay which can take hours, if not days per frame.

Have a look at this animation for an example of what can be done with the real-time renderer: http://www.caligari.com/Gallery/Animations/2008/feb/default.asp?Cate=GAnimations

Also, basically, in workspace, what you see is what is rendered when you use the DirectX materials.

Finally, these scenes can then be used outwith TrueSpace in truePlace which allows you to 'walk' around the scenes.

Realtime will never replace, IMHO, offline rendering as the quality is completely different. It can be quite impressive however and I believe the video card is the limit here rather than the processor. A high-end Nvidia 7 series card or equivalent will give you good performance with the new 8/9 series cards being better. I use a 7900GT and it flies.

Regarding collaboration, it basically provides an interactive environment where users can work on models together or observe them being build. I've never managed to attend a session but they used to hold them every thursday - it was at 2am GMT or somethling like that so for me it was no use.

Someone else can probably provide more insight as to what happens or how it can be used.

Tiles has covered most bases here...;)

However, a quick search of the forums will show great support and ideas for the use of realtime rendering. It would not take a knowledge of Rocket science to see how this would appeal to Microsoft either.

Personally, I am using workspace more and more even though most of my digital assets are based in model side. However, I have looked into online teaching/learning environments and tS/tP seem to be the way to go here so I guess that is just one example of realtime.

Model side development is well know to be cancelled as the workspace is the new code that will be developed but a look at the Captain's blog will show some new features already announced.

Some are sceptical of the future of tS, some are positive and hopeful...is this any different from any other aspects of life?

Personally, I have no problem either way...:D

Must point out the flexibility of workspace UI though, I have mine setup to look very similar to model side while I made the transition. I even posted a layout that mimiced the toolbar layouts but that was just for fun really.

I've been using tS 7.5 since the sale in January and am finding Workspace easier to use than model side, but it feels like model side has alot more control and sophistication, and I use model side when things I'm doing start to get complex and I need a finer degree of control.
