I want to animate a hand (I've already rigged it with a skeleton). The hand holds an object between finger and thumb. I want to lower the hand and associated object into the scene from above and at a specific point, the finger and thumb move apart releasing the object which then falls to the ground using physics where it will bounce to a rest.

I've looked at the manual till I'm blue in the face and, like all good manuals, it insists on telling me how to do lots of things I don't want to do rather than how to achieve the one thing I do want to do.

I'll keep plugging away at it until I find a way to do this but if any of you more experience animation guru's can give me some pointers I'd be very grateful

Thanks in advance

Chuckle - I get to answer my own post! This turned out to be far easier than I expected.

I had my hand and my object and keyframed them in the starting position. Then I moved to the relevant frame selected both hand and drop object and positioned them at the point where they were to part company and keyframed them there.

Next I used FK to animate the hand opening and withdrawing from the scene.

Then I returned to the frame where the hand and object part company, assigned some physical characteristics to the drop object and ran a simulation. When I was happy with the result I generated keyframes from the simulation and it all worked like a charm - easy-peasy.

I've lost count of the number of times trueSpace has allowed me to do something far more easily than I'd anticipated before starting!! :D:D

This sounds like it would make a good example to add to the manual. :)

Hi Wizard.

Here's another trick, so you don't have to animate both the hand and object:

Use the Attach to Bone tool.

At the start of animation, use the attach to bone tool to attach the word to the hand.

How?

1. Click the Attach to Bone tool

2. Click the bone you want the word attached to

3. Click the word

The hand bone and word are now attached together.

At this point, you can keyframe the hand only. The word will move with it.

At the point in the animation where you no longer want the word to move with the the bone, use the Attach object to bone tool again. This will 'disconnect' the word from the hand.

Thanks Frootee - I suspected that this might work but after disconnecting the word from the hand bone there would be no transform clip for the word. Of course if the attach object to bone and unattach object to bone actions are captured by the keyframing it wouldn't matter.

I'll keep this in mind for future reference :D

Aw Froo, that's simply way too simple!

I can't believe I never thought of that myself as it's so obvious once it's pointed out - I'll definitely remember that technique:D

I really need to stop making things more complicated than I need to!
