Hi all,
I have to create a 3D model of that lamp.
It looks easy. It is not.
How would you make that shape in trueSpace ?
Any idea ?

Looks like the soft selection tools would work really well here. That and the displacement brush. ;) |

Call me mister tedious but I would get the rings and physically make this. using swept cylinders matched up to each ring (torus)...does that make sense? |

Thanks for the ideas.
I think Jack is right : this is the occasion to play with the displacement brush. Perhaps, I should draw the texture first, then use it to deform the sphere.
I will show you the result... |

I gave this a shot in ClothMotion.
Basically load your sphere as a cloth, throw in the rings and set the sphere object to be Fixed to the rings at certain points. Throw in a gravity object, and that's basically it.
It's pretty flexible because you can change the location, rotation, and scale of the rings even after it's all set up - just hit simulate and everything falls into place as it should. To keep the mesh "frozen" at a point where it looks good, just keep only that vertex keyframe - delete the ones before and after it. |

Yes it is simple and easy !
You just need a nurbs modeler....
Thats one of the reasons why I bugged some of your ears! ; P
I did that in Moi 3d in 1 minute : )
You just make the rings .... connect the 2 rings with a tangent
line on each side and hit network !
voila !;)

Your absolutly not limited to any shape of the
outside......
nurbs just need 4 curves of any shape to make an outside.
Truespace has nurbs but lacks some of the functions that one
would need to make this kind of thing easily !
But with the loft tool and curves this is not impossible !
I hope for the next generation of Truespace to do this kind of thing...;) |

That's good, but I think your not seeing the reference properly.
The skeleton of the lightshade is two helixes running in opposite directions (or maybe the same direction just offset, it's hard to see). There's probably a trick to making this easily, but I think emmanuel is correct in saying it's a challenge.
Franks cloth idea is great btw. |

Started to experiment with the idea of these lamps. Not what you asked for but I wanted you to see them anyway. Add some rings and bingo. They were fun to make. |

Any kind of spiral form in any shape and any direction be that one
or 2 can be made ..... its just a question of time to tweek them...;) |

If you look at the rings real close you'll see that they are not a spiral at all. Every other ring is opposite of the previous, so they flip flop. It just looks like it might be a spiral shape. |

Okay, that makes sense. I'd like to see one in real-life, just to be sure.

Here is my version.
Was maded in WS with default sphere..
11250
This has been created to be used with Vray... you can find the faces of the sphere are fliped. that's a very nice trick to simulate how the light pass throught the paper..
The sphere has a paper texture, self illumination, and a bit of transparency..

There isnt any shape like a flip flop ( it must be a political creation
but not a geometrical one )!
Well creating a texture on a bumped sphere is not the genuine lamp !
I thought we were talking about real geometrie !
Your lucky that its paper if it were celophan you wouldnt have an easy go !

So far Prodigy's looks the closest to the original image.
No offense to anyone else intended.
Some clever approaches so far to the problem.
If you look closely at the original it appears that the hoops criss-cross in an X pattern- not a spiral and not just a series of stacked toruses...torii.
No sure how Prodigy did it, but if the model doesn't need to be an atom-by-atom reconstruction of the actual lamp, but only has to resemble it to a reasonable degree, then it doesn't matter how it was done.
It looks close enough to convince me. |

Many thanks to everyone.
Lots of good ideas here ! I like all of them. The ClothMotion approach is very interesting. It would probably be the most flexible choice if I had to create different models.
Progigy and Steinie's models are looking good too
Since I wanted to draw a texture, I gave a try with Modeler's trueDisplacement plugin. With both a soft displacement (0.02) and a soft bump map (0.1), the result looks convincing : |

TrueDisplacement was a $15 plugin by Chikara Kojima. Today, you can find it in the dePak, along with ClothMotion and SkinModifier.
It is the ancestor of Workspace's displacement tool, but in my opinion, it is still more flexible than the new tool. |

I completely missed this thread and just found it. It is great fun to follow and very informative.
Could be the start of a new challlenge Simple and easy, or not? , just a small reference picture and everyone trying to get close with their favorite tools!
