I just purchased a new laptop and trueSpace does not run on it.

It is an ASUS G2s ; technical specs here (http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=74&l3=463&l4=0&model=1675&modelmenu=2).

First, I tried to install tS 7.51 on the pre-installed Vista32. tS installs but at startup, I get a Modeler only. No Rosetta/Workspace item are visible. Also, the toolbars in Modeler window don't pop up !

I thought it was a Vista problem, so I formated the HD, installed XP pro and re-installed tS.

This time, trueSpace only shows the splash screen and crashes. I get no UI at screen at all.

I tried to install tS6.6. Same problem although the UI get loaded for one second before the crash.

I am really in trouble since I sold my old laptop and I must run a presentation on Wednesday ! :(:(:(

Any idea, someone ?

Have you tried the Hotfixes?

The following hotfixes are recommended for GeForce 6, 7, and 8 series customers running 3D applications on Microsoft Windows Vista:

Yes, I tried it on the Vista install. It fails. So, I removed Vista and started with a fresh XP install. But... same issue :(

Yes I remember it failing as well but I was persistant. There was a workaround @ MS where the update is. Sorry to hear your troubles. I hope you find a resolve.

I forgot to mention : I tried to run Windows with no hardware acceleration ; and the problem remains.

I have a Dell with those exact specs (Asus makes most of Dells computers for them as I understand) and I have no problem at all with the running of 7.51. I checked to see the drivers I have installed on my graphics card and it has it listed as 7.15.11.143 (I have exactly the same graphics card as you). I am running Vistas home premium (32 bit) as well. Like I said I have no problems at all so you might want to try this set of drivers because I can guarantee that they work-not that its necessarily a graphics card issue of course. Just in case you want to try something. Good luck.

Cheers

Thank you Possumpete :)

I will check Dell's drivers.

In the meantime, Paul (Cayenne) gave me a trick via MSN. Here is it :

In tS directory, you have a file named Calddraw.dll. If you rename it (like Calddraw_backup.dll) and run tS -any version-, Modeler's DirectX mode is OFF.

And trueSpace actually runs :)

Wireframe and OpenGL modes are the 2 only available modes... but it works !

Thanks again Paul ;)

I just got an ASUS G1S and tS7.51 wouldn't get past the splash screen. At first it said "msvcrt.dll" was at fault. After updating with hacked drivers, it said "ntdll.dll" was at fault.

For some reason it worked after the ASUS recovery re-installed Vista 32 after a failed XP installation.

Display adapter drivers for my 8600M GT are version 7.15.11.138.

I still can't get tS7.11 to start, though. If I run it I get two error messages. The first is:

"Some of the components could not be registered. Please restart your computer and try to run trueSpace7 under administrative rights or reinstall it under administrative rights if you get this error again."

then

"Failed to initialize kernel subsystem. Application will be terminated"

It then briefly flashes the trueSpace interface in a windowed mode, then quits.

If I right-click the desktop icon and select "Run as Administrator", I get a "trueSpace has stopped working" dialog box. This is what is in the "View problem details":

I don't know if this will solve your problem Ian, but here is what I tried yesterday :

Download and install Nividia 8600GT driver (not the Mobility version).

Of course you will get an error message and the driver will not install since the chip is different.

At reboot, windows offers to install the driver manually : locate the Nvidia folder and select the 8600GT driver.

It will install, and run trueSpace in D3D mode !

I am not sure if it is all safe for the system though : Mobility chips are supposed to be underclocked hardware...

with ts7.1 and vista theres a line in the init.js that needs commenting out , its detailed in this post here http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2113&highlight=init.js&page=2

Here's the nVidia drivers (163.75) you need to use for TS on Vista 32:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15369

You will need to copy the modded .inf over the .inf included in the install to get it to install on your laptop.

All of the newer drivers so far do NOT work with TS. :(

Also it can help to download and install DX9 (which doesn't come with Vista).

I am running Vista Premium 64-bit w/ nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS. I was having a similar problem with nVidia's current drivers when viewing the Workspace (Modeling worked fine, '4-pane' view only had a toolbar misdraw which cleared up when I moved any vertical window splitters).

I can use ts 7.51 in Workspace mode (with latest nVidia drivers) by turning on 'Bloom' and setting it to minimum bloom-age. Then the Workspace draws fine without losing your image. I also noticed that if I made the 'floor' paint as a 'grid' (instead of checkerboard) that it also fixed my Workspace problem, but 'Bloom' fix gave me the best of all results.

Works for me as a 'temp' fix. Maybe you will have similar success.

OK, now tS7.11 is up and running. I had tried this earlier, but there was an additional step (step 4 below) that I needed before getting it to start up.

1. Open c:\truespace7\tS\scripts\init.js

2. Find and Change:

RsApp.ImportPackage('{14640977-24EE-4A07-8028-EDFED6E0E3EE}');

To:

//RsApp.ImportPackage('{14640977-24EE-4A07-8028-EDFED6E0E3EE}');

3. Save "init.js" with the new change

4. Right-click your trueSpace 7 shortcut and go to "Properties". On the "Compatibility" tab, make sure "Run this program as an administrator" is checked.

5. Run trueSpace
