I have a fairly new computer with Vista Home Premium that I installed a eVGA 8800GTX video card in that I'm trying to use with trueSpace v7.51. When I start tS in DirectX mode, the model side of tS simply shows a gray screen and the player side initially displays correctly, but quickly repaints as a solid color.

If I switch to OpenGL mode, the player side seems to operate correctly, but the model side has very strange artifacts drawn in the workspace and none of the model renders work correctly.

I am using the latest nVidia released driver and have even tried the latest beta driver with the same results. Yesterday, I decided to switch video cards back to the card that came in the computer, which is a GeForce 8500. Yet again, an nVidia chipset, and it too has the very same problems as described.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has seen similar problems. If I try trueSpace 7.51 on my Windows XP box with the latest nVidia drivers, everything works as expected.

I would really like to use tS with my VISTA box since it has much more CPU power for renders, but I am at a loss on how to get it to work.

Did you also apply the "hot fixes" for NVidia cards and Vista?

Here's the link....

If that doesnt work, you might also try updating your chipset drivers.

Yeah, I've already applied all of the hotfixes as well as system board updates. Thanks for the input though.

I have always seen problems when using the nVidia generic drivers.

Did you not get a set of drivers with the graphics board, from the manufacturer?

The problems do not show in all applications, and installing different nVidia driver sets on top of each other can lead to further problems.

Personally, I would remove all nVidia graphic drivers (there is a driver cleaning tool available (just do a search)), then would install the original drivers (that came with the board).

The latest NVIDIA drivers have a problem with tS (169.25)

The solution for the workspace is to ensure that Bloom in enabled, and then the view will not reset to a solid color. Alternatively, you could revert to an older version of the drivers (the set prior to the most recent did not have this issue).

I havent seen any problems Model side though from these drivers, so not sure if that is the same. An earlier driver version might be worth testing for that one.

HTH!

I have tried the original drivers that came with the video card as well as nVidia drivers that are a bit older; all have the same result.

However, after days of trying every permutation that I could think of, I have discovered what causes the problem. I am using a 30" display with a native resolution of 2560x1600. I started incrementally dropping the display resolution and trying trueSpace with the same results until I got down to 1920x1200 and then everything works as it should. Working my way back up, everything continues to work until I reach the screen native resolution of 2560x1600 at which it absolutely will not display correctly.

I'm not sure if this is a driver problem or a code problem with tS, but at least I have a temporary workaround even if I have to sacrifice screen resolution.

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.

There's definitely a problem with the 169 driver series and TS. 163.75 works fine, but I'm not sure that driver is available for 8800 series cards.

The good news is that I downloaded the leak of the 171.16 drivers and they seem to work fine. They can be found here:

But the 64bit version isn't available yet. :(

Keep in mind these are not official beta drivers but they seem stable to me on my Laptop with XP and the Vista ones have been getting good reviews on the forum.

If you also set the ground to Wire, the problem goes away...I had the same problem the other day - first time I've had time to use TS in a while...

Jack - I tried the 171.16 drivers and they are stable enough, but I'm still seeing the same results.....if I set display resolution to 2560x1600, the model side screen is solid gray. If I drop resolution down to 1900x1200, everything is fine. Very very strange considering I run a lot of CAD apps and trueSpace is the only application that I have a problem with.

Bummer Rich, that's a lot of resolution to have to sacrifice.... :(

Tom may have already alerted the devs, but I'll also post a note on the beta testing forum for them to look. :)

I did think that such high res needed 2 DVI connections (from same card) with split screen (which the card handled) not a need from application?
