I posted something similar after Vista was released but I just put the problem down to a new OS and my lack of familiarity with it but Vista has been in around 6 months now and I reformatted this weekend to a new fresh mobo and I am still having the same problem:

More often that not I cannot copy, move or delete tS files!

Vista is a real pain when it comes to copying files around (takes an eon for some reason) but the only ones I constantly have trouble with are tS files particularly scenes and objects...the machine just hangs when copying and deleting is even worse. There always seems to be some file in there that will not delete and I can't get rid of .bak files either.

I have tried UAC off, took ownership etc. but still cannot delete them all. It seems worse if tS has been running in a session but I have never been able to copy or delete a whole folder of files and even if a few go there are always some in there that make it hang until I close the process.

So, maybe Vista problem, maybe tS problem but could Caligari take a look at this or at least point out what I might be able to do to organise my tS files in Vista?

Just trying to copy back in to tS my backed up files before the format is driving me mad...I have to load each one manually then save back into the tS library...

It's a whole file ownership thing. I had problems with a file on my desktop which I couldn't do anything with. However, I had the infamous display stopped responding and has been recovered issue so I rebuilt and it seemed to fix the problem although I've not accessed old files...

Anyway, try selecting the files/folders and get the properties. Go into advanced in the security section and set the owner to be your user account then apply to all children. Next, make sure you have full access rights back in the security tab...it mostly fixes it...mostly.

Also you can set TS to run in Administrator mode.

Right click on the icon and choose properties. Click the "compatibility" tab. Check the "Run this program as an Administrator" check box.

Tom says that installing TS to a drive other than C:\ helps as well. I have my TS installation on D:\ drive and haven't had any problems.

Cheers for the heads up guys but I tried the whole ownership thing and I don't have a second hard drive just an external which is just for backup.

Will try again but I only posted this as I have exhausted all possibilities I could think of...:(

I did also notice a weird thing related to files - I tried unpacking a zip with Vista's own inbuilt processes and it was going to take it 2 hours! I canceled that and used 7Zip and it took 5 seconds.

I have noted Vista can also be very strange reading directories - I can't expand a directory by clicking on the "+" in the directory tree, Vista just sits there whirring a busy symbol for a minute or two. But if I double click the directory in the file window in Explorer, it opens fine, and expands the directory tree too, instantly as you would expect.

So something is not right in the way Vista runs its file system (I also find searching is prone to not finding files that I know exist with the string in their name).

So all told I would guess a Vista problem, though no-one else has reported it. I would try:

1. Making a second logical drive that is separate from the one Windows is on, and storing your data there (may prevent this happening in future even though doesnt solve where you are now)

2. Moving the files via tS if Vista is really stuck - open a library in the new location on the second logical drive, open existing library, and load and save between one and the other (you could even try drag and drop in tS between one and the other)

With this done for one or two libraries, check and see if they work any better than your existing ones.

You could also try starting Vista in safe mode and moving the files then in case some fancy high-end process is keeping them locked.

Keep us updated on your findings!

Thanks!

Tom

Oh, one last thing is to try turning off UAC, even temporarily....in the users control panel - that really helps because then everything runs as admin and it stops those annoying popups which is a bonus...'are you sure you want to see all processes??' YES....i said so already... :)
