As everybody knows by now my pc has failed an I am currently using an old one. This computer has a graphics card that is as old as most of you. It only has 4mb of ram and next to no 3d accelleration capabilities therefore the player wont work. Whenever I try to run tS I have a error message telling me that player cannot start because there is no 3d accellerater. Is there any way of
1)by-passing this message and just use the modeller side.
2)Forcing tS to start with player turned off, or player using wireframe or something that does not requite 3d accelleration.

I have tried telling player to use wireframe in the CTRL-Click options before tS starts, however it still comes up with the error.

1) - it should be
2) yes (tS7 only runs on xp)

The gfx card is not dx9 compatible, its probably dx6/7 or something even worse

4MB card as old as most of us? I doubt it - as old as you, maybe. :D Pure wild guess in the dark here, but it's not an S3 Virge is it? I only mention that as I remember using tS2 with 1 of those [not my machine, I had a Voodoo 3 at that time]. The performance was less than brilliant, but it worked ok in wireframe as long as the polycount didn't get too high [then again, that machine only had 64MB system memory & a 300Mhz K6 CPU]. Like I said though, that was tS2, so I don't know whether your machine will cope with tS7 model, even in wireframe.

The only way I can think of to possibly get it to work:

go into the folder:

trueSpace7\tS\RS Libraries\Layouts Items\Configurations Items

make copies of the Default & Full layout files

delete the originals

then rename the copy of Default to Full, & vice-versa.

That might work, no promises though.

Having said that, if you're card isn't even DX7, I'm not sure you'll be able to get it working at all. If you tell me what it is I'll look it up.

It's an onboard gfx card, the intel i810 chipset, i will try what you said, thanks.

Well, that site I usually reference for graphics hardware info doesn't list the i810 as such, but it does list the "Intel Extreme Graphics" & "Intel Extreme Graphics 2" (http://www.rojakpot.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=88&pgno=9) , & I [b]think 1 of them [probably the 1st] is another name for the i810.

Depending on how much system memory you have, you may be able to increase the amount of memory available to the i810 (http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-009473.htm).

I am British, yes, but whilst I got your point I think you missed mine. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/damnkids.gif

The real problem is that tS7 is the Player along with it's underlying architecture - the Model view is bolted on to the side of that, so in effect you are asking how to start tS7 without tS7. I don't think there is a way to do that.

It's only once tS7 has loaded that you could choose the Full layout which puts the Bridge into auto mode and disables the Player, but tS7 has to load for you to get to that point.

The Player is DirectX 9 only - even with objects in wireframe it is running in DirectX (as seen in the chequerboard ground plane)

Oh - and tS7.1 will allow you to install under Win2K with some requirements - that was one of the changes made between 7.0 and 7.1

Hemulin: I know you said your mobo & CPU were toast, but what about the graphics card? Couldn't you put that in the machine that has the i810 onboard? Or doesn't it have an AGP slot?

Unfortunately it is a very old motherboard it doesn't have very many options.

AFAIK graphics card is fine, however as my other mobo is so old it doesn't have an agp slot, I do have a pci gfx card that might run tS7 however my other computer is currently in a slimline case and the graphics card is standard size. Moving all my parts to another case would just be too much hassle, as I said, im going on holiday at the weekend so there isn't much time that I will be using my old computer. Thanks for all the help though.

Now who's mislaid his sense of humour, eh? I was merely teasing, hence the http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/tease.gif.

No problem. I know what you mean about hassle with moving stuff to & from cases. That's 1 of the reasons why I like my current case so much more than any others I've had, nearly everything's tool-less. With my recent HDD troubles, having rails that just clip onto the side of the drive so you can slide it in & it locks into place was so much less hassle than having to fart around with screws.

Yeah, my brother has a case like that, I was planning to get one, however due to recent events I think I will be staying with my current el cheapo one. It works, just the quality isn't brilliant, certain holes aren't in exactly the correct place, that sort of thing.

Mine wasn't that expensive, cetainly not when compared to something like a Lian-Li full tower [for a long time I dreamed of getting a PC-71 :D], as it was only £50 from Maplin, but sadly they stopped doing them shortly after I got mine, or I'd have got another for putting a secondary system in.

I would consider that quiet expensive for a case, I know they can get much more expensive however I am more used to the £10-£15 range, being a student and all.:D

Yeah, the PC-71 (http://www.lian-li.com/Product/Chassis/Server_Full_Tower/Classical/S_C_PC-70.htm) still goes for just under 3x what I paid for mine (http://www.fortrex.com.tw/show_product.php?proSN=133).

Ah, I see. When considering a case I tend to consider things like how easy it's going to be to work on/in when adding/removing stuff, airflow, etc. The biggest reasons for me buying the 1 I did were the tool-less-ness of it, & the fact that it can take an E-ATX motherboard [for when I (hopefully) eventually get a dual-Opteron board].

ts 7.1 allows you to install under Windows 2000 now? Dang. I bought XP just to use ts 7. What are the requirements/restrictions then? (I bought 2 copies of XP since I have 2 systems that I use tsnet with... ). That's a good $300 I did not have to spend then... I could have bought that 20.1 inch monitor with that!

tS7 will INSTALL under Windows 2000, but not necessarily run. Windows 2000 is not a supported OS, either.

Originally, we had the install set so that it simply wouldn't run if it found it was being installed to a Windows 2000 machine. Now, however, we allow the install to go ahead, but it is very much at the user's own risk. As noted, there is no guarantee that it will work, and it is a non-supported operating system, so that if it doesn't work, there isn't anything we can do. Windows XP remains the only supported OS (not just "only recommended", but "only supported")

So don't worry, your upgrade to Windows XP remains a very wise investment indeed!

HTH!

On a slightly different front, I am now running tS7 on a p4 with hyperthreading, tS automatically works out that during rendering it can use the second core, however it doesn't use the second core for moving around the scene and for any pre-render stuff. This is annoying because I have a scene with a high poly count and because only half of the cpu power is available the scene moves about slowly. Is there a way to make tS7 use both virtual cores for pre-render stuff?

Hi Hemulin. I would suggest picking up a new video card, if possible. A newer technology video card that supports directx 9.0c will be much more efficient at handling real-time display of your models.

HTH,

Frootee
Frootee, I don't think you have read my previous posts properly. Let me recap:

1. My decent PC has fried, it had a good graphics card and ran tS7 fine
2. I am going on holiday on Saturday
3. I am ordering my parts 2 weeks on sunday (when I get back)
4. I am currently using a Celeron 500, which is bad and won't run tS7 (however as I have only a few days until I go on holdiay its not such a big blow
5. In the last few hours I have set up my family pc, a P4 3.2ghz to run tS7, it doesn't have a very good graphics card, however as I don't plan to use player in the next few days, just modeller I am not bothered, I can still carry on with my RC Fan Car.

Thanks for all the help guys, my light is slightly brighter now!
