Hello all:
I design chemical and biological identification equipment, and I am working with an external industrial design firm for the appearance modelling for a new product we are developing. They do their CAD in SolidWorks, but their rendering/modelling in Rhino. A few months ago they ported a file over to me in, I believe, 3DS format and I imported it into TS 6.6. While the model did make it, it was not completely correct. The model came in as hundreds, if not thousands of individual objects in a hierarchy. Some of the faces were colored incorrectly, and, most bizarre of all, when I rotate around the object, faces change color depending on the angle at which I view them. Needless to say, this is not what I wanted.
Has anyone successfully ported files from Rhino to TS 6.6 or, now, 7.1? Do I need a program like AccuTrans to get this right, or is there a preferred format for saving that works directly with TS?
Any ideas what happened to my previous object? I can make it available to anyone who is willing to take a look and let me know what is wrong with it.
Thanks,
Scott |

From the tS manual "Separate objects within a .3DS file will be loaded as sub-objects of a single parent..... Hierarchy information is not currently maintained." so that explains the hierarchy you see. The problem you describe with the 'faces changing color' sounds exactly like flipped normals on the object. All in all, I'd have to say that .3DS doesn't sound particularly useful for import.
For pure geometry import I use DXF but if it's necessary to have texture maps too then I use .OBJ. |

is it possible to export a directx file from rhino, then import that into ts 7?
Or maybe import into gamespace light, then export into a ts native format?
