I was using a Wiki the other day and it occured to me that might be a really useful way to gather together information on programming, scripting, and the new TS7 way of working.

There are a lot of holes in the information that is provided and it would be a whole lot easier to see that information gathered together in a Wiki than try and have to search these forums.

Would anyone be willing to host something like that?

You could try this:

http://dhost.info/

There doesn't appear to be a catch, other than you don't get a url like www.username.com, instead you get something like dhost.info/username, oh, & you can't hotlink to stuff hosted there, apparently.

Why not set one up at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page), that would be the most logical place to put it, surely.

Wikipedia occurred to me, but I was envisioning more detailed information than you would normally see in Wikipedia - which could certainly link to a more detailed site.

Maybe a poll would be a good way to see if there is interest in a deep technical Wiki on Truespace and if people would be willing to contribute.

My interests of course are selfish. I am craving more information, but I would also like to contribute what knowledge I'm gathering back to the community in a way that is easy for people to view.

For instance I still have not been able to learn how to get the VertexSelectionStream out of a mesh that is being edited. tomasb gave tantalizing hints, but not quite enough detail for me to use it.

Unless you've gotten about 2-5 pages of written material to put up on Wiki then don't bother because they'll see it as an advertisment and remove it. This recently happened to SILO and anyone who posted in the debate whether it was relevate or not that didn't have an account was dismissed as fishers. Irregardless of what was said.

So Wiki is a good idea of a system, but poorly controlled by people who don't have the required knowledge to correctly run it, or seem willing to look for people who do and get their learned opinions on the subject.

Matt Chan (mattam) had a tS wiki set up at one point.
Hardly anyone contributed to it (I did my part) and it eventually died on the vine. The problem is people don't seem to want to be bothered typing up a duplicate to any questions and answers that they usually ask/answer here on the forum. It would be a full time project just to get it fleshed out to begin with. If you are feeling up to it- go for it.

Copy 'n paste would save time on that 1. :)

I have been doing a bit of reading up on it, about what's involved, etc. 1 problem is finding free hosting that provides PHP & MySQL support. I was thinking of using Mediawiki [what Wikipedia runs on], but I thought I read something somewhere earlier about it using/needing more than 1 database, & the only free host I've come across so far [that provides PHP & MySQL] only gives you 1 database.

Also, I don't really know much [anything] about PHP & MySQL. :o

I'm not all that fond of the more basic-looking Wikis, I prefer something like [for example] Mediawiki, which is 1 of the reasons why I never really bothered with Mattam's 1 [that & I didn't really know much (anything) worth contributing back then :o].

As to why I don't serve 1 from home - that's easy, I don't have a spare machine.

If there was enough of a cause for creating one don't you think Caligari could fund it?

True, though if they were to do that they'd probably want it done by Norm or TomG, & those guys are probably busy enough already.

On a slightly different note, if 1 does get made I think it would be wise to make it such that only registered members of this forum could post info, otherwise [judging by the visitors section before it became moderated] it might get "trolled" [or spam'd].
