I'm starting this thread with the hope that we might be able to combine our experiences & discoveries to hopefully find some sort of solution or workarounds to the problems some of us are having with Layouts / Windows Management.

Here's what I've got so far.

tS appears to be sensitive to certain situations involving monitors & resolutions [may not affect everybody, but are possibilities people should be aware of]:

Having tS installed & having used it with only 1 monitor connected, then installing a 2nd monitor & trying to use tS again.

Using 2 monitors at different resolutions.

changing resolution settings [using Windows display options, or ATI Catalyst Control Centre, or ATI Catalyst profile manager - I don't know if anyone's experienced probs doing this with Nvidia based cards] whilst tS is running.

Having a dual monitor system, on an ATI-based card [again, may apply to Nvidia as well, I don't know], with the monitor connected to the analogue [15 pin D-sub, instead of DVI] port set to primary, then at a later date [not whilst tS is running] replacing the analogue monitor connected to the DVI port with a DVI-capable LCD. [either Windows or the Catalyst drivers decided to automatically overide my existing settings and assign the LCD as primary - after I managed to get it back to the way I wanted it is when the trouble started]

tS Window Management & Layout stuff:
Toolbars in Model that are not docked to the edge of the Model window will disappear from the screen if 1 of the newer tS7 windows receives focus [LE, a non-docked Player window, etc], but should reappear when the focus returns to Model [eg clicking in the Model window].

Toolbars that seem to disappear [I'm talking about a modified version of the Full layout here, haven't tried the others] can be made visible again, but you're going to have to learn your way around the LE.

I don't yet understand why the LE "paths" vary between layouts, or even between modified versions of the same layout on different people's copies of tS, but basically, you have to go into the LE [Ctrl+Shift+F2, incase you've lost the bar with the LE button on it]. It should start off in the scene [folder? level? object?], which depending on whether you've used the Create New Scene button or not during the current tS session may either be called Space 3D, or newscene. The important thing is that you click the orange triangle to go up a level & end up in Project.

Now go into Windows Manager Space [using its orange triangle]. Somewhere amongst the stuff in here is the way to get back whatever toolbar has gone missing.

Warning: I strongly advise against trying to hide/unhide anything in the Windows Manager Space level, as if you do it to the wrong thing [I'm still not sure what will or won't do it] you can end up causing tS to hang & you'll have to kill it in Task Manager.

What you need to do is go into each of the objects with the word frame in their name & look for an object called toolbar. It's possible you may have to go more than 1 level deep in some cases. When you find an object called toolbar, click the grey triangle to show its options [if they aren't already visible]. If it has a Hidden option & it's turned on, try turning it off. If that doesn't work, either you need to go deeper [in through that object's orange triangle to see if there's anything else called toolbar inside it], or you haven't found the right 1 yet.

There also appears to be an issue relating to where exactly the toolbar is located. I'm still a bit hazy on this 1, but it looks like where it's located will affect whether the toolbar only appears in Model, only in Player, or is visible for both.

this happens to me on a regular basis..but I have no docked toolbars so they all disappear..

on my setup only custom toolbars don't hide..any stock toolbar will hide..even modified ones ..as long as they still have the original toolbar node..

I think it's because everything is a node..change one thing on your layout and the arrangement of nodes in the LE change too..

that hasn't happened to me ..[floating based layout]

as for dual monitors..ATI anyway..I never use any of the features [hydravison] they just caused problems..

You could make a copy of the toolbar. There's probably a way to do it by finding it in the LE, then inserting it in an object library, then dragging from the library to... somewhere else [not sure where] - but it'd probably be quicker to CSD [Ctrl+Shift+drag] the buttons off it to create a new toolbar.

That could be it. I've also discovered that the Command History window can provide some insight into what goes where, path-wise I mean.

Do you mean you haven't had any toolbars that disappeared, but would't reappear when you clicked in Model? If so, then I envy you.

It's never really been a major prob for me. Occasionally I'd find a prog that it affected, but not the way it was supposed to, so I'd just add it to Hydravision's exclusion list. The reason I use it is because unfortunately too many programs don't remember which screen they were last on &/or just automatically put their dialog boxes on the primary screen, regardless of which screen the actual prog is on.

here's a trick to hide toolbars..the top one is built out of the library toolbar..so it hides my plugins when switching.[just don't click reset]. the lower one was built custom so has no hide feature when switching to player..:D
