Hello everyone,

I am importing a 3ds object I made in another app into trueSpace. However, even though the import succeeds, many of the object's faces are flipped so some parts of it are invisible from some angles. When I click on Flip all Faces, well, all faces are flipped, which means that the ones that were facing the right way are now invisible. This is a complex object and flipping faces one by one is a lot of work (which I will have to do if there is no other choice). Is there a way to fix the faces without having to click each one? Or is there a way to make the faces double-sided so that all parts of the object are always visible? And finally, can it be done from within the Player view? Thanks for any info.

Hey PrimMac, I have never been to impressed with the 3ds format as I always run into problems with them, Even importing and exporting from 3d max has problems, Can you change the format to obj, if not maybe you can post the file here and I can see if I can open it in Max and see what it looks like there and maybe convert it.

Cheers,

PrimMac: Not sure if this will work, but have you tried turning on the double sided setting for that object's render options?

Agree with daybe. After all the troubles I had, I don't touch the 3ds format any more. Too many problems with import/export in any 3D Software. OBJ is a rock solid (simple) format that is well supported in most packages, my first choice.

Daybe is right on about the 3DS format....OBJs are much more stable.

If you reopen the file in MAX try the "Normalize" option on the faces. This may reduce your pain when importing to TS.

The best bet is to get out of the 3DS format!

second agree with daybe and graysho...

have you tried the "flip all faces" tool in PE mode?
Sometimes if I have problems with wrong normals (not all just some faces) it resets all faces and unify the normals.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I tried exporting the object from the other app as .obj, but when imported into TS, I still have a lot of backflipped faces. Haven't yet tried Flipping all Faces on the OBJ yet. One difference, though... in 3ds format, I could not apply subdivision to the object, got an "Error in the object's geometry". In OBJ, subdivision causes all the vertices to "stand on end". Applying subdivision in Player Mode works on both formats, but of course, the results are not satisfactory when working with flipped faces.
