You should have by now downloaded the WHEEL_SECTION.cob file in my other thread (SRC11 Supercar, Image Gallery).

Create a blank scene, then load up object called “WHEEL_SECTION.cob”. Note the position of this object, viewed from the top in second image in this section. We are making a 5-spoke wheel, so this section is 1/10th of the whole wheel.

Click on “Mirror Modeler” tool: the object is mirrored.

Then, on the Mirror Modeler toolbar, click “Erase Mirror Plane tool”, and click “Create Welded Object tool” to create a complete object. Click Object tool to exit edit mode.

Repeat the steps described above until you have an almost “closed” circular shape.

See how the wheel is taking shape gradually.

For the next steps, make sure your selection tools are set to select backside vertices as well.

Using a rectangle selection tool and starting from the left, select all vertices as close to the centre line as possible. Be careful not to touch the centre line.

Now delete those vertices by clicking on the “Erase Vertices tool”.

Click object tool to exit edit mode. You now have an object you can mirror to form a complete round wheel!

Image 3 as explained above. Don't know why I can't upload 3 images at once here!

And there you have it folks! A complete wheel. Just hit the SDS tool to your heart content, etc. Now, how many of you figured out all these steps before I started this thread? Just kidding. Hope I have provided some useful modeling tips here.

Final tips:

The key to successful operations with the Mirror Modeler is a perfectly flat mirror surface used as the Mirroring Plane. If you want to choose a mirroring plane which runs across non-contiguous faces, you need select only one of those faces for a successful mirrored object, as long as those non-contiguous faces are PERFECTLY CO-PLANAR!

Typical sequence of actions:

1. Select the face you want to use as mirroring plane

2. Click Mirror Modeler tool and the Mirror Modeler toolbar appears

3. Click Erase Mirror Plane Polygons tool on the Mirror Modeler toolbar

4. Click Create Welded Object tool on the Mirror Modeler toolbar

You now have a welded object.

During the operations described above, it is imperative that you do not move a face or vertex or edge by accident. To prevent accidentally moving a face/edge/vertex in editing mode, turn the GRID SNAP TOGGLE tool ON and LEAVE IT ON AT ALL TIMES, and enter high values (use whole unit rather than fractional values such as 0.5 or 0.75) in x, y and z grid settings.

Good one i_maker, useful information, I must admit I was a bit stumped for a while. I always find it interesting to see how others approach a task. There use to be a tutorial at caligari showing how to model a star fish seems to be gone now, but very similar solution.

Thanks Daybe. I must have been a good learner then!

Thanks i_maker! Very nice description about method of creation. Now the rest of the car, piece by piece, just kidding :). That is one of my goals, is to model a car. I am thinking of a classic car of some sort, maybe something that most wouldn't even consider to model, like an Edsel or something. Second goal is to do it all in the Player using SDS. Keep up the great work.

Very nice insight description i_maker. Should help a lot of people. The FlattenFace plugin might also be useful to create plane faces for the mirror modeler. I don't remember where to get it, but googling should do it.
