I am a teacher in a private high school and I have been using Truespace since Truespace 2. (10 years???) Over the last several years I have been encountering more and more problems using all of my graphics programs because of network permissions problems. Only administrators can write to the hard drive and this is causing some software to run in quirky ways and some not to work at all. Bryce will not save on some of my computers and DAZ studio will not save at all. I tried installing Trueplay on a computer and it will not run when I log on as a student (It runs fine when I log on as an administrator. )

How do other schools solve these problems??? Does anyone know of any schools that run this kind of software on their network and what sort of security set up they use???

I use TS in my teaching but I am yet to put truePlay on the network. However, you have got me thinking about it noe so I shall investigate. You know what school ICT technicians are like so please don't expect a quick answer from me on this one...;)

I don't not know from experience, however coming across similar problems, it is quite possible that you will need to change the permissions of the truePlay directory allowing users to read and write to it (you need to do this with truespace if you want to let limited users edit shortcuts and stuff).

If you dont already know: You do this by right clicking on the folder (assuming its win2k/xp and go to permissions, click on students or users or whatever group the students accounts are in and then tick the box that says write or modify, then click apply).

It would be useful to know a bit more about the network you are trying to run truePlay on (eg what server OS are you running, what client OS are you running, are you using)

Unfortunately the entire hard drive the the is locked down. I don't think you can unlock a single folder

Let me run this by the tech guy.

Hemulin you are a GOD!!!!!!!!

I am not sure what is worse, a problem that can't be solved or one which you have been struggling with for years that has a simple solution. It appears I can change the permissions for specific folders on the hard drive and that appears to solve all of the problems that I have been having.

Kudo's to the Caligari forums. I have been on it for a couple of hours and have already fixed something that has made me nuts for a couple of years.

No, he is one of my students...he is pretty good but don't give him a god complex... please...;)

Ironic isn't it...you have a problem at school and a 15 year old kid solves it for you.....

God, I'm getting old.....:p

Sorry, that last statement was not directed at you Hemulin...I mean your holiness...

LOL. :D

This kinda reminds me of when I was in school. We'd just switched over from BBCs to 386s [I'd have been about Hemulin's age at the time, coincidentally], & although our head of the computer department was always telling us to never give out our password & not to pick something obvious... he used the same login & password for the 386 network that he had had on the BBC network [1 of the 6th formers told my best friend & I when we were lowly 3rd-years]. This meant that if he checked up to see if anyone had installed or played any games [which were against the rules] when he wasn't around he wouldn't find any evidence.... http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/lemming.gif

unless he checked the logs for his own account. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/whistling.gif

I'm glad you got your prob solved Jimr, & welcome to the forum. :)

However don't let that put you down!:p

I have some experience with these sort of things as I am kind of an IT technician for my school's IT department.

Don't mean to put you down Hemulin (heaven forbid I get accused of that too ;) ) but if I have to teach you for another two years, a God complex is a the last thing I need you to have.....

16 eh? I hadn't noticed you had started shaving..:D ;)

I am still pretty amazed that something as simple as changing permissions on the folders can fix this problems and that my tech guy did not tell me about it.

I find myself in somewhat of a moral dilemma here. My techguy and my immediate boss are very supportive of what I do here. Unfortunately everytime I encounter a problem with my software they either tell me the problem cannot be fixed or that fixing it will create major security breaches that will allow terrorists to hack into the system and destroy all life as we know it on the planet.

Unfortunately their paranoia is not unfounded. Several months ago a couple of hackers sniffed out all the teachers passwords and decoded them. The guys said that they just wanted to see if it was possible. That explanation would have satisfied me if they wern't going around selling the passwords to classmates.

I think I am going to keep this fix to myself. Apologizing later will probable be eaiser than asking permission. Thanks againd guys you rock! See you around the forums!

Don't change your permissions on any System Directories. That can get you in trouble if a student makes a mistake. I would think the network guys already have those directories locked down. You problably had rights to change the others all along. This is a good practice at home too if your on a network. This is what I do on all my systems.

The only folders I am unlocking are the Truespace folders. (When I install Trueplay I will probably unlock that one as well.)

If I do not change the permissions on the system folder I assume that does not open up the system for hackers. Can anyone think of any potential risks in allowing students to write the the truespace folder?????

Rereading what I just wrote I realize that I am working on the assumption that there is an unhackable system. (Talk about mythical beasts) I just want to avoid tearing big holes in the networks defenses.

One small problem I see here is kids inadvertantly saving files on the hard drive of their computer and not on the network folder. That is just a question of educating them.

That depends on how much you trust your students. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/shifty.gif

I must confess I don't know too much about network-related security, as when I left school they were still using Windows 3.11, & I haven't had much reason/opportunity to learn more about more recent networking-related security, but I think the only risk would be of them deleting/corrupting [either ignorantly or maliciously] files in the trueSpace folder.

That reminded me of this:

The only secure computer is one that is turned off, locked in a safe and buried 20 feet down in a secret location, and I'm not completely confident of that either.

I recommend using a clue-by-four (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Luser_Attitude_Readjustment_Tool). http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/devil.gif

I remember that time myself. I had a weird growth of hair on single spot on upper lip (just left of center). So I grabbed a razor and decided to shave it off. I had a scar from one side of my upper lip to the other for a month. My second attempt at using a razor was much less painful :o

I continued shaving carefully for remainder of that year and eventually xmass came along. I found one of my presents that year was a can of shaving cream, a new razor and some after-shave lotion. My Mom looked at me with the straightest of faces and said "I figured you should have one of your own and hopefully you will stop using mine now." I have never turned that shade of red since. And the chuckle my Dad let out will remain with me forever.

Pretty cool to be the age of Hemulin with a teacher such as Paul. I remember cool teachers from my experiences. They remain with you forever as well.

I agree, however fortunately my life story on shaving is not very interesting ;)

Jimr: I don't think you will have any problems with security issues. If you are using newer OS's like Server 2k3 and Client XP, then there will be greater security options that dissallow users from accessing the local drive from any file manager, they are only allowed access to removable drives. It is quite possible that someone will be able to hack this however I don't know why they would wan't to. However I would advise created a zipped (http://www.winzip.com)/rarred (http://www.rarlab.com) archive with the contents of the whole of the truePlay folder, straight after install, that way you can easily replace the folder if it becomes corrupt.
