Hi folks. I have a 19" CRT monitor and am considering purchasing a 19" LCD monitor to go along with it. Does anyone else have this sort of setup?
Currently I have an ATI Radeon X1600, which appears to support a secondary console. Anyone else have this?
What kind of configuration would I have to do to get both monitors working correctly?
Thanks!

Not yet, but hopefully I will do in the not too distant future. ATM I have 2 CRTs: a 17" [primary], & 20" [secondary]. The plan is to replace them both [though not at the same time, for financial reasons] for 2 of these (http://www.xerox-displays.info/product_display_xap.html) [both 19"].

Nope, ATM I have a Radeon 9600 Pro, but AFAIK there shouldn't be any probs running 2 monitors off it.

Nothing special:
just connect the LCD to the graphics card & boot your system up
install the drivers
r/c on your desktop
select properties
click on the settings tab & you should see 2 rectangles labelled 1 & 2
1 of the rectangles will most likely be greyed out, select it & then turn on the checkbox labelled "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor." |

I had an 19" CRT and bought my first LED monitor, once I plugged her in I couldn't stand looking at the CRT afterwards and ended up buying another LED. So for now I have two 17" LED and got rid of all my CRT monitors. Looking at a possible wide screen LED in the near future. |

Sorry for nit-picking :o, but don't you mean LCD monitor? I know there are now LCD monitors that use an array of white LEDs instead of 4-6 CCFLs, as you can get much better contrast that way, but they still use an LCD display, the LEDs just act as backlights. There are OLED (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLED) [Organic Light Emitting Diode] monitors on their way [eventually], which are supposed to be better in nearly every way [except apparently for the longevity of the blue 1s, but that's being worked on - which is a pain, as most of the display on my MP3 player (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/images_to_link_to/Aigo_A205_Black.jpg) consists of blue 1s :(]. |

I have just bought a 19" Samsung LCD and don't regret it. Response time is fast, colors are brilliant. It's like working in a whole different world after working with a laptop for more than half a year.
If you have the ATI icon in the system tray, right click on it. When dual monitor is supported, you will see something like RADEON X1600 secondary. |

I was looking at Samsung as well but still looking Viewsonic looked good as well, as my 17" crt was built in 1997 I think it's time to retire it, 19" is the way to go, better then the 17" models as 19" are the next generation and are way better in response time and display. |

If I have a CRT and the LCD monitors connected to the same system, are there any issues with refresh rates? I'm concerned about screen flicker and also ease on the eyes. Heck, maybe I'll just buy two LCDs, and put this CRT next to the other one on the other machine... :-D |

Sounds like a good excuse to me. :D Seriously though, there's no reason why you can't run 2 monitors at 2 different refresh rates [mine are: 17" @ 85Hz, 20" @ 60Hz]. 1 thing to bear in mind with LCDs is that as they work differently to CRTs you could comfortably use an LCD at a lower refresh rate than a CRT [LCDs tend to have lower refresh rates anyway, it's Response Time that's important when shopping for LCD monitors - don't pick anything that has a time higher than 12ms, although that's more to do with whether you see trails with fast movement or not rather than eye comfort].
1 other thing - whilst different refresh rates is not a problem, some apps don't like it when you run 2 different screen resolutions at the same time.

Hah! I wish my 20" was that new! I was given it 4 or 5 years ago, and it was 10 or 11 years old then! [well, according to a tech guy at Eizo it was - it's a Flexscan 9400] |
