hi,

my machine runs very slowly in player mode. ther is a very noticable delay after each click or attempt to change the view.

my machine has an Atholon XP 2200+ processor and I have 1.5 gig of RAM. The specs say that should be enough.

Are there any settings I might have wrong that would account for this?

In model mode everything works just fine.

does model and player modes perform the same on everyone elses computers?

It may run faster if you turn off the bridge. I nearly always have it off to increase performance. Although you have to make sure to turn it back on if you want to switch back to model view for any reason.

Player performance depends mostly on GPU speed, Modeler response depends mostly on CPU performance. If you are sure you have good graphics card, try to download newest drivers; the one provided by OEM producers are too old.

Otherwise, try to lower Player rendering quality.

Your CPU and RAM is definitely OK.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give both adjustments a try.

thanks again for the help. I'm using a nVidia GeForce FX 5700 LE video card with 256mb memory.

I've updated the drivers, but this had no effect.

I reduced the player settings to pixle shaders 1.1 and the performance increased to that of the modeler. but all the lights went out.

Is there some way to get the lights to come back on? I do have lights set up in the modeler scene.

I think i need a better graphics card......:(

My motherboard has an AGP slot, anyone using a card that works on the highest TS7 player setting?

Thanks again for the help.

Unfortunately, although the FX5 series of cards state they have Pixel Shader 2.0 support, this seems to be only in software and not in hardware (at least that is how I understand it, though I am not a technical person by any means!. Similar issues can be found with Half Life 2, which will automatically treat it as a DirectX8.0 rather than a DirectX9.0 card, as the DX9 is too slow to be usable.

So unfortunately this does mean a better graphics card with full Pixel Shader 2.0 and DirectX9 support. Fortunately, those are not expensive. Anyway of the 6 series of NVIDIA cards will do the trick, eg GeForce 6600 etc, that would be the lowest level NVIDIA card to work well. I'm not sure what the "lowest level" ATI card is, but I know it's all in the same price bracket and you can find the cards starting at around $120 or so, maybe a little less.

Obviously, the higher above the minimum you can go, the better results you will get :)

HTH!

To have full hardware DirectX 9.0c support on an ATI card you need a card whose model number starts with X1, i.e. X1300 [lowest DX9.0c complient model AFAIK, & probably a bit underpowered for tS7], X1600, X1800, & X1900.

radeon X800 will also work OK. (also other Xzzz cards from ati should work OK)

I thought tS7 required DX9.0c for all the visual "eye-candy"? The X800 is, AFAIK, only a 9.0 card, not 9.0c (http://www.rojakpot.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=88&pgno=0). Even the X850 crossfire edition is pnly a DX9.0 card.

9.0c introduced only some minor changes. there are some variants of ps2_0 like 2_0b etc. these differs from 2_0 mostly by removing some 2_0 limitations (for example on shader size; number of available texture reads..). it supports all build in ts7 shaders in highest detail but you may get fallback modes for some most complex custom made shaders.

I'll bow to your wisdom on this 1 Tomas, I thought there was a bigger difference between 9.0 & 9.0c.

Yeah - its good news too - the price difference is huge!

Anyone got any ideas about the best value fastest midrange PCIe graphics card for TS7 ? - something between the x1900 and the lowest 9.0 cards? - I have a parhelia APVe at the moment - it only supports DX 0.1 or something! :(

Not sure which models you're talking about for the price difference, the X1800 & X1900 series are expensive, sure, but the X1600 series are a lot more reasonably priced. Having said that, a top of the range X850 XT PE [or whatever, I forget the exact suffixes] still goes for prices that aren't that different to some of the X1800 & X1900 models.

LOL. There's several things to consider between the choices. From having a look at 1 of the hardware sites I buy from on occasion you could get an X1600 XT or 1 of the X800 series for roughly the same price [£100-£130 - I forget what country you're in (if you've ever said), but that might give you an idea of what to expect].

Things to consider:

The X1xxx series cards have the new "AVIVO" [not to be confused with VIVO, though it can include it - ATI made a major goof on naming policy with this IMHO]. This is supposed to improve picture quality. It also [AFAIK] provides acceleration support for the H.264 codec. I don't know if you've ever tried watching anything encoded in H.264, but I have a 2.2Ghz XP3200+, 2GB RAM, & a Radeon 9600 Pro, & all my system could manage was the lowest quality version of the file for playback without dropping any frames! If you don't plan on watching/using H.264 then obviously this isn't something you need to think about.

There are other improvements in the hardware of the X1xxx series, but TBH I don't understand them well enough to really explain them. :o

The X800 series: If you haven't looked around yet, be prepared - there are a quite a few variants, & I'm not just talking about different manufacturers. Off the top of my head there are the XL, XT, XT PE, Pro, GTO, GTO2, & of course the standard [no suffix] variants.

Also, I just saw something (http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/127) about being able to mod some X800 GTO & GTO2 cards so that you end up with what basically amounts to an X850 XT, [b]but remember that doing so would void the card's warranty.

Hope this helps.
