Vray bump map disappears

I came across this when trying to build an ancient looking ruin. The picture below is a slight representation of it. As you can see the bump map
(not normal map but also) that it's visible in the middle where the light hits the ground but under the ledges it disappears.

*Using Vray
*I have only 1 infinite light pointing straight down
*I have GI on using defaults

Now from what I can understand about GI is that it's the bit of light that makes things in shadow visible to put it simply and in this case (indirect lighting).

I can actually fix this by adding another infinite light that faces up but should it not have really made a difference? Anyway I'm kinda just wondering if this should happen.

Also if I'm missing the point completely, please correct me and if possible some pointers on when to use it(GI) :o I know it's useful for outdoor scenes.

You're not missing anything, it's a limitation of using a featureless single colour for the GI. Bump maps are a cheat that only work with directional lighting so when the light is shining equally from just about every direction, the bump is equally lit and effectively disappears.
