Hi Folks
I'm modeling precious Gems as an excercise and now am stuck at setting up the Vray shaders. What works so far is gold and silver nicely, but not the nice faceted ruby or diamond appearance I am looking for. I would love if someone could offer advice on how to texture these - especially a scene file to start with or shaders that you've used to do this effect.
See what I am looking for -

What comes closest to the refraction/refelection effect was to try the conductor shader using these settings -
Lum=0, diff=0.1, shine=0.8, spec=0, refl=0.8. One spot light above to the left of the gem. However, I get better effects with Vray's GI on, but not close to the photo above.
Can anyone offer some advice whether Vray or lightworks is better for Gem rendering, and some examples...
I'll offer some pictures etc.. when I have something worthy
Thanks

Ok, just spent 14 hours doing research and reading much about gems. Now here's my progress with a settings screenshot. Bottom line is lightworks can render very good gems.
This is a sample diamond setup with lightworks. Although I have Vray, I am going to see if it can beat lightworks in quality. I know the caustics are tricky to setup, but I will give it a shot...

Nice nice but maybe it get more realism with a environment that mirrored in the diamonds. |

Now I've become much better at using lightworks for rendering gems. Spent last few days learning some of the modeling in TS7 and applied a few things to render these rings. The precious gems were downloaded from various web sources, but the rings I made.

I am making many more rings as I learn more about TS7's modeling tools
