Hi all,

Just thought it might be fun if we got folks to model their own pinewood cars (the kind made by the Boy Scouts for racing on 32ft strips of track) using trueSpace of any version.

Figured the projects can be as simple or complex as the user likes but that certain rules must be followed.

I don't have the specs at the moment but I was thinking about something like the following.

Everyone gets a model of a set of wheels and a block. The part of the car representing the wooden part must be able to fit within the supplied block and axle spacing front to back and side to side must be maintained. Decorative items are allowed but must represent something reasonable for a pinewood car (i.e. plastic chrome engine from a suitable toy, etc). Paint to your own desires.

See the following site if you don't know what a pinewood car derby is about.

www.pinecar.com

Anyone interested? :) We could do a poll for best beginner, best intermediate, and best pro design.

The wooden blocks are 7" (length) x 1 3/4" (width) x 1 1/4" (height)

axle spacing is as follows:

front of block to front axle 1 1/16"

space between axles 4 1/8"

back of block to back axle 1 13/16"

Wheel diameter 1 3/16"

Wheel width 3/8"

Maximum allowed width (including wheels) 2 3/4"

This is a good thread. I hope you get many entrys! The wheels really look like real ones.

Hey that looks like the car I entered when I was in Scouts. How did you get a hold of my top secret design? :D

Anyway, Cool idea Prof!

It would be fun to take the cars entered and run them in the player with physics simulation!

lol. Mine from cub scouts was not much different :)

Anyway, the pinecar kit is finished and ready for download. Version included for TS4.3 as well so that folks can participate regardless of version (at least from 4.3 on)

You may have to do your own texturing. I'm not sure how well they'll transfer across computers or truespace versions.

Professor,

Being a noobie and all, how does one get that nice shiney reflection of the car in the floor surface?

Haven't got that far yet! :)

how does one get that nice shiney reflection of the car in the floor surface?

I just use a mirror reflectance shader with the following settings:

luminance 0

diffuse 1

shininess 0.8

specular 0.7

reflection 0.4

The color is set to grey (R, G, and B set to 141)

The blue tint comes from global illumination used at render time.

HTH

P.K.

Cool this brings back memories, I did this when I was a kid. I still remember what it looked like, didn't fair to bad either although we didn't win.

Nice one! :)

She looks aerodynamic enough... with enough weight in the back she probably screams down the track! It is a she isn't it? :)

I can tell I'm going to have to 'spruce' my model up. :)

P.K.

P.S. Nice stand and lighting effects :)
