I'm new to TS 6.5.


I'm running Windows XP with an NVDIA GeForce 6100 graphics card. I read the Settings chapter in the manual and am reasonably sure the settings are correct.I also read posts about rendering issues, but haven't seen this exact problem.


In D3D mode and with the Render as Solid option selected, the shaders work beautifully. All the information to render a perfect scene are visible. However, when render the scene to the screen, it looks totally off as the scene loads and then returns to the perfect scene I have been working on.


When I render the scene to a file, it looks as off as the screen render (prior to it returning to the perfect scene.)


Oddly enough, only when I use the Area IIR viewing mode on an object, I can see the real output as I work. I just can't believe I have to only work a scene using the IIR option full-time.


What am I doing wrong? Thanks

The real-time render is just an approximation, and a lot of other things can affect the offline render. The new tS7.6 is better, it's real-time renderer gives a much better idea of what to expect from most things.


Items that will make things very different in the final render from the offline engine to a real-time preview are things like reflectance and refraction (real-time shaders don't do those as they require raytracing), IBLs, HDRI, and some light types that real-time can't simulate.


This is all less of an issue with tS7.6 (which is free....) as it's real-time preview gives a much better idea of what to expect than back in earlier versions of tS. Still the only way to know what your final offline render will look like is to actually do test renders. Using Area Render usually does the trick, it's what I used to do.


Every render engine is different, so you have to work with its output to be sure of what you are going to see. You will get used to material settings etc and get a better idea of what you'll get just based on preview spheres in the Material Editor etc, but in the end, test renders and test area renders are the way to go (and reducing the need for those is one of the major reasons behind the new real-time engine in tS7.6, though it doesn't do away with it entirely).

PS - for specifics on what is happening here and how to solve this particular situation, we'd need to see the scene in real-time mode, some wireframe showing the lighting, some information on the materials being used, etc.

Post both images and maybe your scene file. To say it looks different, but only post one shot...tells us nothing. I'm sorry I know you must be frustrated..

That's what I assumed was the problem, just needed to know I could trust the Material Editor and not the Workspace image when applying the shaders.


I downloaded 7.6 first, but it froze up my system.


Went to 6.5 because of the price and system requirements. What are the system requirements for 7.6. Either way, I'm going to have years of enjoyment. Thanks for a great product.

This is the final render. I made out better with E Phong shader than metal.

2 angle of the same goblets. Any comments or hints?

It helps to have a surface for the shadows to be cast upon.

Also you don't want to use white as a surface color since it doesn't give the render engine any room for lighting -- what is brighter than white? Better is a gray or bright gray. Shadow maps will probably give you the best results for what you are looking for.

Another good tip, is that metals need something to reflect to look good. So using an IBL image or HDRI (if you have 7.6) will give better highlights and reflective look.

tS7.6 specifications are on the specs page:

Not sure how you have tS6.5 though - tS6.6 was the last version of tS7.6, and so predates tS7.6 (or tS7.0 for that matter), so that you should be on tS6.6 at least, if you purchased within the last 3 years or so.
