I understand that with Photon Mapping, that I should enable Final Gather.

Is it also true that with Photon Mapping that Ambient Occlusion is no longer needed and should be turned off?

Are there other typical settings that should be set when using Photon Mapping as opposed to Direct Lighting?

The Ambient Occlusion and settings are only used if Direct Lighting is selected.

I recommend downloading the Yafaray User Guide here:
http://www.yafaray.org/documentation

Also this page may help as well:
http://wiki.yafray.org/bin/view.pl/UserDoc/YafaRayParameters

You may want to post your finding so that others can experiment and learn from them.

Thanks, Jack.

I had not seen the link to the parameters list.

What is still unclear to me is the issue of which parameters are ignored under certain conditions vs just not necessary (or worse).

For example, AO, is used for Direct Lighting but it is possible to enable it in Photon Mapping. In PM, is it ignored or still doing something to the image?

I don't know if this is possible, but it would be helpful if in a future iteration, parameters that are unnecessary/not used for a particular type of render (Direct, Photon etc.) were not shown or greyed out or not clickable. That is, when Direct Lighting is chosen, you would see an AO option and when Photon Mapping is chosen, you would see a Final Gather option.

Of course, if one already knows which parameters one should use, then this is not so important. However, as yet, I have not seen a good guide as to which parameters are important for each of the available modes.

Another interface option that would be valuable--especially to new users--are presets for the parameters. I believe that Kerkythea has such a system in which you can choose a range of Photon Mapping presets which trade speed for quality.

That said, I believe that the out-of-the-box experience you have with the default parameters in tS/Yafaray is excellent. As I mentioned in another thread, I could not quite match its quality with Blender/Yafaray for some reason that I still don't understand.

Good job to all involved and thank you very much for bringing this tool to the community.

I just tested using the jScript Macro Recorder changing the attributes on the Yaf(a)Ray4tS panel and it works a treat. I would suggest making sure nothing is selected before activating the jScript Macro Recorder. You could then rename the script that is recorded and save it to a Library. HTH
