Hover over icon, hold CTRL and right click, opens the dialog to set the hotkey.

No, the old way (Model side) is to hover over and press CTRL and F1. CTRL and right click is the new workspace way.
Some controls can't be hotkeyed succesfully (or some keys can't be over-ridden succesfully), in particular things related to views, axes, etc. You may just be encountering one of those.
HTH!

Vizu is already at the point where he can see the assign shortcut dialogue. What he wanted to do is to have a key combination, with one button being the mouse button.
Like CTRL+LMB for Camera rotate
But this doesn't work. You can combine two keys, but not a key with a mousebutton :) |

Vizu what you have described is a maya style nav combo of alt and mouse... Well thats already been written for WS. I use it all the time.
I believe this was written by either Stan or Steine apols to the one is wasn't,
Visu I did a quick search in forum..... no luck...
So have uploaded temporarily to a host myself.... will keep the file up for a week.
Load this installer file (only 66kb) into one of the TS libraries. Open Ts then open the librarie and load that installer into the LE window. Double click the button you will see on the installer .. and thats it you now permanently have alt+left alt+right and alt + mid for your view movements.
Hope that helps

If this doesn´t work out for you, I have modified my background widget to do exactly what you need. Although it sometimes stops to work in point edit mode for some strange reason.
