The manual, Chapter2 User Interface, page 70, says:

Just place your own grid object (available in the “DX – View, Components” library as “Scene Ground”) into the scene and this grid will override any per-view settings. When the grid is active, it is displayed in preferences as “Workspace –Ground”.


I can get the solid grid to show, but when Wire is selected no grid shows up.

Edit: I have managed to get wire grid(s) to show up. But when I switch one grid back to solid, it disappears again.

Bring in another grid object. If I remember correctly, the first grid you drag into the LE will replace the original .... so I have seen this same scenario you describe and by dragging in another grid, you can set it up as shown. Is a bit strange I admit but not too difficult to deal with.
