Is the trueparticle any good. I am trying to find a way to make video effects such as fire, lightsabers, gun flashes for video editing and trueparticle is not the most efficient for this. Are there any programs I can do this with that are free? (its for a school project)

Check Jhowells posts, he seems to have a knack for this kind of stuff

Talking about trueParticle, I just realize that if I pick a plane object as particle, the original UV projection is lost.

I never encountered that issue with Primal Particles which is the particle solution I use the most.

Can anyone confirm ?
Is there a trick for trueParticle to keep the original UV projection on every particle ?

What trueParticles does with a chosen custom object is it, quite simply, mangles the UV coordinates via some strange triangulation-like method. Even though it does the same each time you reselect the object, that is if you keep rotations at 0, I don't know if there is a patter. So unfortunately I don't know a way of remedying this happening, and not even sure why it does it in the first place.

If someone finds the pattern you can try and mangle your UV's beforehand, but even then it is entirely dependent on the rotation of the first particle.

Thank you Robert :)

For this particular project, I will try to use Primal Particle then.

I am glad trueSpace offers several particle systems though ;)

Check this video out if you get a chance, this is real time renderings being captured from the screen using a capture program. Anyways real time fire, lightsaber (I see no reason not), gun flashes as in a puff of bright smoke coming out should all be very possible if you want to go that route using DX shader called tSpecial-E in Workspace. The plus is you get immediate feedback of a special effect and extremely fast rendering speeds with many effects going on at once. Since real time, you could interact with the objects, change angle etc. in a live interactive demostration. Using fix color background in WS you can then intergrate with live video using blue/green screen effects if you have the equipment. Just another option. Let me know if you are interested.

Edit, forgot to say you can also keyframe all effects and render to file images which you can compiled into an animation. Render speed, depending upon your hardware is less then a second a frame.
