A couple of weeks ago I bought the vray renderer for trueSpace 7.6. I was under the impression that I would be able to see reflections and refractions in real time. I have been working with this for a couple of weeks now and I don't see any difference in the real-time renderer.
Did I misunderstand something or am I doing something wrong? I am happy with the vray because I find the material editor a lot easier to use, but I really expected to see a difference in the rendering. |

hey nelson.
The realtime renderer is DirectX. VRay is an offline renderer, so it will not alter the appearance of real time rendering.

V-Ray is an offline renderer. It adds offline rendering to the workspace side - without V-Ray, you need to switch to the Model side in order to get access to an offline renderer. V-Ray of course adds to the workspace side, but NOT to the real-time renderer, which remains unchanged.
Currently, no technology offers real-time reflection and refraction, as those are too computationally expensive to be able to do in real-time and it takes offline rendering to calculate.

Are you sure about that? Check Dbokons Glass and metal dx9 shaders.

Yes, the glass and metal shaders are "simulated" reflections and refractions, they do the job very nicely, but they are still not true raytraced reflections and refractions :) Whether they are good enough for the image / animation / scene in question will be up to the artist, but it's still not entirely the same as the original question about having real-time reflection and refraction. Primarily though I think the original person was wondering why a regular shader with reflection or refraction doesn't show up with that effect in real-time on purchasing V-Ray, and the answer is that those effects aren't calculated at all in real-time without some special real-time code to simulate / emulate / create the effect.

I think you guys are missing the point.
It sounds like the OP needs help setting up via the Package Manager and initiating a render using VRay.
If it's been 'a couple of weeks' and he still hasn't gotten a render there's something hinky going on. |

It could be -the question was that he saw no difference in his real-time renders, but I was thinking they had it working for offline renders. Definitely worth asking though :)
So, the question goes to Nelson, do you have V-Ray up and running for the offline renders that you make? V-Ray is an offline engine, adding it to trueSpace lets you use it in place of Lightworks or Virtualight but doesn't change your real-time engines at all. If you do not have V-Ray up and running for your offline engines, let us know and plenty people here are able to help!
