A bit of a tangent to 3D stuff but, with all the various 'specialist backgrounds; on the forum, I thought it would do no harm to ask.
I am wishing to run my website from a CD and I found a program called HTTrack. It is great and works by collating your entire site into a single folder and executable. However, it poses a few problems for me:
1. I would need to run the compiler each time I made changes to my site.
2. It is having trouble accessing the 'protected' area of my site.
3. I don't want it to add the 'sample' section either.
So, I want to copy to HD and edit my site then burn it to CD so it autoruns.
Ideally I would want a splash screen that offers the viewer the option of choosing the browser to use or ideally, I would like it to autorun in explorer.
Does anyone know of a program that would compile this or do I simply need an autorun.inf in there? If so, how do you direct a file (probably index.html) to open with a particular app.

you can try an HTA (Hyper Text Application) but that would limit it to IE/Windows.
I've never found a good package that wraps HTML as an application for a CD...they usually suck.
To be honest, and I know it's more work, it'd be better to create an intertactive DVD or something. it's not that difficult and there's plenty of inexpensive tools out there that will let you do it. Lower resolution I know but still, so many more people would be able to use it. |

Thanks guys. Prodigy, that program is helpful but runs a compressed file in its own viewer which does not seem to support flash, javascript, or .png transparencies.
I will keep looking...:D |

It's been a long time since I did much with web pages, but when I used to code them, I would set up a corresponding directory structure on my drive, have all the hyperlinks and such be relative to that structure, then upload it all. As long as the folders and such were named the same everything works. It would also work on my local machine that way as well for testing.
So... couldn't you create your site so one your PC's drive, then just copy the entire directory structure to the CD?
Then all you need is the autorun.inf file to point at the index.html file for it to start up.
Of course all the individual files and such that make up your site would be easily browsable on the cd, but if that' not an issue I think it would work. |

Well, I guess so. I think I must have a few 'dodgy' links in here; ones that have a web address rather than a folder/directory reference. I just wanted something nice and 'flashy' to wrap it all up so it doesn't just look like a backup CD. I got an educational CD the other day which looks very flash and professional but it actually opens up your browser to view the content.

If you need to run your hole website on a CD Rom with flash and all your stuff maybe the best solution is just copy all your site and add a autorun.inf that load the index.html :D |

Not sure why guys but when running the site from the HD (even in a browser) the flash stuff does not work, but if I run from the site it does.
So, long winded though it may be, I have now uploaded a password and sample free version of my site and can use HtTrack to compile it into a single folder with an .exe.
Still need a flashy (non HTML) front end though.

The problem is, I think, is that you want content that requires some server-side support. Your browser can run some basic functions and scripts on its own, and you can write your site to those limitations. Otherwise, you need something to act as a web server - IIS, Apache, or some specialized program (?). |
