What buttons do I need to push to apply a shader to only the selected faces like on the screenshot?

Thank You

The Paint Face icon, in the Material Editor. This will paint all currently selected faces if you are in Point Edit with faces selected. If not in that mode, then it activates a paintbrush and you can just go around and click (or click and drag) to paint over the faces.

Once you have them painted with a unique material, you can then use Paint Over Existing Material to change all faces on that object that use that material with just one click on any of them.

HTH!
