how does one set the index for Gold?

according to all the info I've found, it's refractive index is .47.... but the shaders in tS 4.3, 5 and 7.6 won't allow you to set it below 1......

if you tryd to change it with the sliders, try typing in the value manually

There's a better shader for gold than 'golden.'

I think it's a shaders lab one. Should be a link to it somewhere and it has rgb settings and something else, forgot.

It's under Metals3 for materials.

why do you need it for a metal?

Or do you want to create a transparent metal? The refraction index is just important if you want to create transparent materials.

for accuracy actually... you see, the refraction in this case has nothing to do with transparency. all metals etc have a refractive index transparent or not... -

Metals

Aluminum 1.39

Copper 2.43

Gold 0.47

Mylar 1.65

Nickel 1.08

Platinum 2.33

Silver 1.35

Titanium 2.16

(as listed here - http://www.robinwood.com/Catalog/Technical/Gen3DTuts/Gen3DPages/RefractionIndexList.html )

thing is, I've got the one you mention James.. the gold looks more like Brass...

yes I know the values but anyway it doesn't much especially with the pure truespace materials. Maybe you run some tests and see a different between activated and deactivated ior.

The ior is just a value how the light scatters "in" the material. So for liquids or things like gems the ior is usable but metal?! mmh, don't know.

Refractive Indices in tS are used to bend light when it passes through an object. This would make no difference with a solid metal, so I wouldn't worry about setting the value - it will only change Transparency, and won't change regular reflections.

HTH!
