hard to explain, but I will provide a video.

I chose a red color - colored some polygons. Changed the color to black and colored some more polygons. Changed the color to white, and the black ones became white.

I've noticed this with both real-time and v-ray. It doesn't always happen, and I can sometimes switch to 7 different colors and shaders with no problem. Then I will be on another project and I cannot switch even once.

That change is because you are editing the selected material -- Inside the object instead of the temporary material inside the ME.

If you are using my "Mapped" materials, I have set them to show up in the panel tab when the object they are applied to is selected.

so the material editor is for the last object you painted it on? How do I stop it being like that?

Depends on your settings. Remember that the new material editor supports material instancing. So by making changes to an instanced material you can change all occurrences of the that material on every object in the scene if wanted.

My guess is that:
1.) you were seeing the material for the selected object showing in the panel as opposed to the Material Editor selected material.

2.) you have "Edit selected material directly" checked in the Advanced aspect of the Material Editor.

Also notice in your video that instead of saying D3D Material for the material panel, it says "Solid".

Ah.. so not a bug. for some reason "Edit selected material directly" was checked. So not a bug. Thank you.

The problem with adding more features is that they make the interface more complex. The art in interface design is making something simple and intuitive to use without having to remove advanced functionality.

Know what you mean... I wonder if calling it "edit material on object" would make it more clear to other people. I think it would have worked for me, but such things are subjective. and you certainly cannot please ALL the people ALL the time. best you can hope for is to make it work for MOST of the people as often as possible. :D
