Hello

Interesting, I did not read that we are able to animate a character using all the new Workspace IK tools but still return to Model side and Render using Lightworks !!!

Is this an 'easter egg' or something ?

This model's texturing and bump mapping were done back in the day using Lightworks as the render engine so nice to see the animation and what I am use to seeing on the render.

Looks like the SDS swtiched to the Model Side SDS...regardless...I dig it !

Though I am sure there is some limit to what objects/animation from the WorkSpace port over.

Bridge set to On with Full Merge.

Again..is this mentioned in the manual ? I did only skim through that section knowing I did not have Vray and was pretty familiar with Lightworks. And after re-reading did not see any mention of it.

Though I did only blaze through the PDF the second time as well :D

I think it's mentioned more by implication than anything else! Rather than being mentioned in the Animation sections it's mentioned in the Lightworks Render options so you might not see it at first or realise the implications - but it does work well!

It's something that a lot of people seem to miss in the general confusion of trying to sort out all the different render options.

Yep, its intended - we didnt want people using the free app on its own to have no offline rendering of their animated characters, so we made sure you can switch Lightworks to render the workspace side animations.

HTH!

Well I know I am getting old, but just where is this mentioned in the manual ?

For instance the checkbox to preserve model procedural animation ?

Good question! I'm not sure it is mentioned in the manual.

The section on rendering with LightWorks (Chapter 7) from the Model side uses pictures of the tS5.x/tS6.x Render to file dialog and does not show or mention the animation source.

In the tS 7.x LightWorks Render To File Dialog, in the Animation box, is a new drop down option allowing you to select your animation source.

This appears to be an area of the manual that got missed as the rendering Animations to file section (bottom of page 70) does not mention this.

Here's the new version of the Render to File dialog with the animation drop down ... er... dropped down!

HTH.

Does this mean that there's some hope for doing this in Dribble as well?

Well if this function is not documented in the current manaul I think someone needs to update the manual.

:)

Seeing as TS is free to give the impression that you can only render Workspace animation using V-Ray or the real-time view really sells the software short.

Vray is nice by Lightworks is not too shabby either, and it to is 'free'.

One may not wish to invest in Vray and may, after reading the manual, think that unless you have Vray you can not render your WorkSpace animations.

I always thought the beauty and purpose of elctronic documentation is that it could be updated as needed with a note-forum post- to go download the updated manual / chapter.

Now this is what I am talking about.

The lack of multi-layered materials was reason number 1 I did not consider Vray. After so many years of working with Lightworks I have a pretty good grasp of it and to think I had to abandon all that time/knowledge to get better CA tools was quite the let down. (Caustics do not turn me on that much - so never really cared)

But with this option to render WS animation in Model side, well then now I feel better.

Too bad the whole setup slows everything down as the apps synch up with one another via the bridge.

PS

Barring any short-comings in the manual I am assuming multi-layered materials or per channel reflectance settings are still not possible in V-ray ?

PSS

I REALLY suggest that this feature be documented in the manual. Unless there are plans to dump Lightworks once the Model side goes away. Which unto itself would be too bad as I find V-Ray very limited in it's current implementation and price.

Could do this in 7.51 as well.

Not sure if it was intended, but I did it anyway. :D

Humdinger - FWIW I agree with you on all points - Vray holds little interest for me until it can do multi-layered materials.

I REALLY hope LightWorks will continue as tS default Offline Renderer in future releases (once model side is gone).

I also agree that the degree of existing interaction between LightWorks and Workspace needs to be promoted far more.

I suspect that part of the reason this has been overlooked is that it requires the use of the bridge which has (unfairly in my opinion) got a rather negative reputation.

Interesting. I was under the impression that Workspace IK rigs and bones were not compatible with the Model side.

So it sounds like, that is incorrect.

If we are able to rig and animate a character on Workspace side, and render in Lightworks on Model side, we can add that at least, to the Tech FAQ.

workspace bones are incompatible with Model side - ie you can't edit them in the Model side, combine them with Model side animation, edit the model in Model side if workspace bones are attached etc.

But you can just flip to Model side in order to render. So long as you arent working with the scene Model side, you are fine. Basically you treat Model side as just being a rendering window :)

Thanks!

Ok Thank You for clarifying that Tom.

Until now, I was under the impression that even if you just wanted to render your Workspace Rigged Animation on Model Side, bad things would happen. But this is not the case. Cool!
