hi, I've recently installed truespace 7.6 on my laptop, but it won't start up. All I get is an error dialog box which says:
thread R_RenderThread : Failed to create the any D3D device (HAL or REF). 3D Engine cannot continue on device without 3D acceleration.
Code File: .\D3DRenderer\RsD3DWindowedThread.cpp
Code Line: 199
Windows error code : 2
Windows error text :
I know my laptop is capable of "advanced 3D graphics" (says so on the label, and it will start other 3D creation package OK) so I don't think there should be a hardware problem.
Suggestions, please??
Thanks,
/Gary |

Hmm, my first guess is the graphics device driver. Make sure you have installed the latest drivers.
As far as I got it, Truespace uses DirectX. Maybe a newer DirectX version can help.
I am a beginner with Truespace myself, but I hope I could help you a bit. |

gwc42 can you post your system specs? OS, video card, DX version installed, etc?
If you don't have those, you could post your computer brand and model so someone can look up the specs. |

Advertising is not all that it could be, and unfortunately saying "advanced 3d graphics" could mean any number of things. A lot of 3D applications (or games) do not have as high a specification for their real-time graphics as trueSpace does, so some hardware would run those things fine but not trueSpace7.6.
To know for sure, we'd need to know your exact hardware, as Jack asks. If you can post the details of that, then we'll be able to let you know more about the problem :)
Thanks!

Hi,
i installed today the first time ts (V7.6) and from the first start
i have the same problem, but i become no significant exceptionmessage.
On the picture you can see the Errorbox (in german sorry ;))
I tried the tips from the thread "unhandled exception crash on startup" (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=6055),
but it doesnt helped. Funnily i have no default.ctx file on my notebook.
I started ts with pressed CTRL and tried all combination of PixmapMode and RealTimeMode but allways the same result :(
My notebook:
Dell Inspirion 9400
Intel Centrino Dou T2500 (2*2,0GHz)
256MB Nvidia Geforce 7800 Go with Nvidia Driver: 177.79
2x1GB Kingston RAM in Dual Channel Mode
Win XP Home SP3
Someone an idea?
thanks

Before you try again and again, sometimes the installation files could be corrupt. Try to download it again. I had two times very stange problems with TS installation which depends on bad download.
Uninstall TS, restart your PC and install it again.
Then it would be good if you test your DX installation.
Type DXDIAG in the "Ausführen" dialog, to start the DX test.
Every display test should work.
You need DX9. And a DX9 compatible graphics card.
If you know how, switch every overclocking off
And switch to best graphic performance not quality.
Later you can switch everything back until you get your problems back. |

Twister, I think it is good that you do not become any exception message. Would be bad. I cannot imagine to live as a exception message. Must be horrible. Everyone hates you 'n stuff.
*SCNR*
Sorry, but that was just too funny. I assume you are german and the "I become a beefsteak"-running-gag is one of the best "germans try to write english"-jokes :D
For the non-germans: There's a word in german: "bekomme". Unfortunately this word means "to get" and not "to become"... damn thing. I hate it :D |

DX9.0c is running and the Geforce 7800 Go is a DX9 Card with all the DX9 Features (Shader 3.0, ...)
The DXDiag test runs all without problems.
Overclocking is not on and all preference in the nvidia driver stands on performance.
I reload & removed ts, clean the regestry ( all ts and caligari entrys) , reboot and reinstall ts.
But it is the same...
I klick the desktop icon from TS and 2 -3 sec. later the error box is there :(
@alionsonny
:p, und ja bin aus deutschland :D... arbeite in "deiner" location, und komme aus den letzten zwei buchstaben meines nicks hier :D
and now back to english :D |

Its run!
i read the thread "trueSpace7.6 Does Not Start on Vista (x86)" (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=5973) and follow the idea.
i set to Windows 98 compatibility and its start.
The Default.ctk is also now avaible. But it is very slow.
I change the compatibility to Windows 95 and is runs muchs quicker.
When i change now back to non compatibility modus its allways does not start :| |

Thanks for the reply and apologies for my tardiness in responding; the thing is, I don't have internet access from home so I need to use public access computers. I don't have all of the specs to hand, but I 'll get them in the next couple of days. What I can say is that i'm using Windows XP and had just installed directX9.0 from the latest redistributable from the microsoft site - does this have to be installed to any particular location for truespace? I'm not quite sure sure how things like this are intended to work. (Why does microsoft have to make everything so darned complicated?)
As I said, similar 3D art-creation-animation software will run - tho of course that's no guarantee that this particular software will....
But it's reassuring to see that I'm not the only user with this problem!
Thanks, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can with the info...

The 5x series of cards from NVIDIA are not really powerful enough to run tS - they are not fully 9.0c and PixelShader2.0 compatible (they use software compatibility not hardware, which means it is emualted in software and so very very slow).
The P4 and only 512Mb of RAM are also not quite up to handling tS well, shouldn't stop it running, but it will mean you don't get very good performance, the RAM is more of an issue than the processor by a long way in this case.
You may have some luck using "Win 95 compatibility mode" according to some people. If you can get tS to run, entering the HW Settings (Hardware Settings) and choosing to use DX8 or even DX7 may get acceptable performance from the workspace, but you will lose the DX shaders and the real-time shadows, so you end up without the real-time quality.
But when all is said and done, you still won't get good performance from trueSpace on that particular hardware set up, sorry to say :( Perhaps "ok" or "gets by" at best. Your main bottleneck will be the graphics card I would say.
HTH!

Thanks for your input, Tom. But if, as you say, the inadequacies shouldn't keep it from running, why do I just get a splash screen and an error box (which I can only close by killing it from the task manager)? Is there any way I can get past this? If not, I guess I'll just have to wait until I can afford a new laptop....

The only suggestions at present are Run As Administrator, and run in compatibility mode. Let us know if either make a difference :) Oh be sure DirectX is installed is the other thing I can think of. Try running DXDiag and see if it works, or reports problems.
Thanks!
