When I launch trueSpace7.6 the splash screen displays briefly but then I get the following dialog:

[Window Title]

Microsoft Windows

[Main Instruction]

trueSpace has stopped working

[Content]

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

[Debug] [Close program]

I've searched the forums and found a similar problem with v7.11, which appeared to be solved by modifying an init.js file. However I can't find any such file in the v7.6 installation folder, so I'm guessing that solution only applies to v7.11.

Here are some (hopefully useful) details about my system:

OS: Vista (SP1)

DirectX: 10

CPU: Pentium M 2.13GHz

RAM: 2GB

Video: GeForce Go 7800 GTX 256MB (Forceware 175.95)

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Try running it as admin.

Thanks for the suggestion. I ran it as admin and accepted the UAC prompt, but unfortunately trueSpace still failed to start and displayed the same dialog.

Could it be the video drivers? Is there a known driver version for the 7800 GTX that works with trueSpace under Vista?

Scapino's tip is great advice as Vista doesn't like installing software if it thinks your unauthorized to do so. Also, make sure your not running any AV software in the background. Keep this thread updated with your progress and the ts community will help you resolve your problem.

This is usually a driver issue with nVidia cards. Updating to the 175.19 or 177.66 drivers should solve it:

For once vistugh may not be the problem, I try to start it with XP and it just does the splash screen and then sits there, not even showing up an an application.

I tried the admin bit. um, was I supposed to install it as an admin? I tried running it as an admin but am no sure how, I think I did.

I'll tr noew drivers when I can get them, after that I'm giving up if the program's too seneitvie to run right on so many systems.

Thanks for the suggestion Jack. I'll give the drivers a try and report back.

Well it's working now, although I've only had a brief play with it. In the end I didn't have to install any different drivers, and was able to get it working by following the advice from Akongo here (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=74099&postcount=24). So to summarise, I have:

Vista SP1 (x86)

GeForce 7800 GTX Go (Forceware v175.95)

trueSpace shortcut set to Windows 98 compatibility (Windows 95 works as well) and run as admin

Thanks to everyone that offered help.

Glad I that it could help. Just want to ask how is your performance? For me, it is pretty slow, and even slower under 98/NT.

I'm just wonder how much faster it would be if I didn't have to run it under some 95 compatibility.

Hmm... that really odd. Have you guys checked if your motherboard drivers and bios are up to date? That sounds like hardware access issues... :(

7900 series nVidia cards should fly with TS. I've tested TS on an older single core 2.0 Ghz Athlon with a 7900 GS and its very smooth. Video card is the main bottleneck with TS as far as modeling goes. CPU speed is mainly important for VRay, Lightworks, and Virtualight rendering. So with the video cards you guys have it should run smooth.

Well I haven't heard that in awhile, check if my motherboard drivers and bios are up to date, sounds as if we had our computer since 1995:D. I have a fairly new dell vostro, just over a year old.

:D It's usually an issue with more cutting edge hardware than older stuff, but hey can't hurt to ask. My ASUS P5N-E nVidia 650i motherboard had issues that were later addressed over the course of several BIOS and driver updates. The problems only affected certain situations so for "normal" use weren't apparent.

The problem is that more applications are actually using the features that are supposed to work on the hardware only to find out the features don't really work. It's sort of like in the old days where the early 3D cards didn't really work so all the real 3D work was done (faked) in software in the driver.

As technology is being pushed and programmers are using the advanced features of the hardware it's getting harder for the hardware companies to get away with hardware that doesn't really work or has crappy driver support.

Though I think it would be smart for Caligari to add options to disable usage of features that are broken on various hardware platforms as well as having better error handling to avoid these kinds of problems.

Dell Vostro you say.....
http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/07/25/nvidia-gpu-update-for-dell-laptop-owners.aspx
:(

There are both bios and motherboard updates for the Vostro 1000. Also the ATI 1150 chipset doesn't meet TrueSpace 7.6 minimum requirements. It's only DX 9.0b. TrueSpace requires 9.0c. You can probably increase performance by changing the Pixel Shader settings in the Hardware settings dialog in TS like Splinter's mentioned in another thread.

Oh that dreaded 9.0c. I was suspecting that, I hate problems like that. Always reminded me of a Simpsons episode where Lisa goes on the wrong bus, hopping on Bus 22 when the correct one was Bus 22A. One of my favorite quotes was when she finds herself lost in the desert, "Ma'am, this isn't Area 51, this is Area 51A."

However the OP did have vista, which is supposed to have dx10, and the only way he got it to work was to switch compatibility to 95/98, which is how I got it to work as well. Still puzzling. But I will check out those updates, thanks for the link.

No problem. Always sucks when it's a hardware issue because there's nothing that can be done then other than to replace the hardware. :(

As a general rule, onboard video won't meet specs to run TS 7.6 well.

Generally for doing graphics or gaming with laptops I recommend custom built systems with dedicated graphics cards:
http://www.geared2play.com/

I had these guys build an ASUS C90 system for one of my sisters:
http://www.istnc.com/home.htm
and she's much happier than my other sister who got an HP which sucked from day one and the harddrive crapped out on her.

The ASUS laptops are desktop level performance and I've had very good luck with them. My old ASUS Z71v has a 6600go (a DX 9.0c card) and still runs TrueSpace (and World of Warcraft ;)) great. Don't just go by price and specs though, read the user reviews and check the benchmarks to make sure the performance is actually there. A lot of times laptop manufacturers will load it up with specs but the performance bottlenecks caused by cost cutting or power cutting decisions in the design often cripple the performance reguardless of the "specs" of the hardware.

You're right Akongo, panning and zooming is definitely smoother when I switch the compatibility mode from Windows 98/Me to Windows 95. In general I would say the performance was still okay with the Windows 98/Me setting, but then again this is the first time I've used trueSpace (or any similar app) so I'm not entirely sure what performance to expect. I'm also not sure why using the compatibility mode would make any difference, especially as I understand that trueSpace 7.6 isn't even supported on Windows 95, but it does make a difference. Does trueSpace run different initialisation code based on the version of Windows that it detects?

Thx!

I have the same problem, only with Win XP home SP3.

My Notebook is a Dell Inspirion 9400 with Geforce 7800 Go (Nvidiadriver: 177.79) and Centrino Dou (2x2.0GHz) from 2006.

The compatibility modus helped!
Under 98/ME its runs very slow.
Under 95 its runs quicker.
I don´t know how is the speed "normaly" from TS, but with Maya 7.5/Cinema 4D i have no problems on my notebook.
