I mean in general usage... I'm finding that moving around an object or using tools to be very sluggish. even when the scene is blank..

I've tried OpenGL, DirectX or just wireframe.. and I can tell ya.. my old 4.3 runs rings round the display on 7.6.

system specs : AMD Athlon 64x2 Dualcore, 4GB Ram, Stripped services (anything not needed is out - see the Blackviper lists at www.blackviper.com), ATI 1300pro with the latest drivers.

it's just so...sluggish...

Could be the video card. The X1300 is a bit low end... does say it is Shader 2.0 compliant though... Is it just Workspace side that is slugging or is Model side sluggish as well?

Have you tried turning off the bridge. I always do that right away. The bridge can drastically slow things down as it has to transfer information back and forth between the new and old architecture.

That would be the first thing I would try.

I do not have such problems with a monocore (it's a simulated dualcore) system.

Do you see the performance in the Task Manager rise while moving?

Is the full power of the dualcore switched on for TS?

What is the speed\Mhz rating of your CPU and how much of an on die memory cache does it have. Some of the very early Athlon 64x2 weren't that good and were very prone to data bottlenecks.

A tip given to me.
I can run tS7 on full quality on my main machine (7900GT) but on my lowly laptop it crawls...almost to a stop. Someone suggested I change to DX7 mode with textures and now it flies. Doesn't look quite as good but...well, you can't have everything...

Good advice Paul! Adjusting the Hardware settings (HW Setting under the File menu on workspace side) will let you turn the workspace down through various previous versions of DirectX. You will lose realtime shadows, nice lighting, texturing, DX9 shaders etc, but for regular creative modeling use it should be just fine, and get tS up and running on an older card.

ok everythings back in place.. a very fresh install and.... 7.6 is still sluggish. going to try the Directx options.. but from what I gather, that will screw up the 'realtime rendering' of images right?

also.. how do you lock a layout? I want tools to stay exactly where I put them (eg point / face edit tools.... why can't I just lock them at the top of the screen and leave them there? why must they keep moving?)

Turning down the hardware settings will lower the quality of the real-time renderings, yes. DX9.0c is required for things like the sophisticated real-time shaders, real-time shadows, etc. Going to a lower version of DirectX such as 8 or 7 will speed up performance on graphics cards more than 3 or 4 years old, but will lose those features made possible by the newer versions of DirectX.

Talking of graphics cards, my 8800 from EVGA which set me back $300 18 months ago is now $110! It gives amazing performance, meaning that extremely powerful cards are now available at the $100 and under price bracket. Nice!

okies. took it right down to DX 7 basic. just as sluggish as full render.

as to the CPU, it's a Athlon 5600+ 2.9ghz, 1mb cache.

looks like it'll just be sluggish then.... (in comparison, ts 4.3 is instant response on all movement etc.)

Tom? the 8800's are flawed. Evidence is coming out that they used bad materials for the 82-88 run of GPU's.

you may be looking at a failure sometime in the next few months.

as to replacing the card... maybe around xmas.... the Hounds need their shots, the cats theirs, then there's house repairs...

The flaw on the 8800 was recent - mine was 18 months old :) Also its only particular kinds of 8800 too, from particular manufacturers. I don't think EVGA was affected at all. Could be wrong though.

As it happens my card needed replacing some months ago, but I don't think it was related to this issue in any way. It was replaced under warranty so that was good :)

I know how it goes on bills to be sure! While $100 will get you a card that is really powerful, you can get awesome cards for $50 to $60 now (the 7600 and up are very good in tS). And of course even better cards at $150 and up.

Won't be replacing mine for some time though, if anything my CPU is next on the upgrade list (but when money will allow, who knows ;))

Thanks!

Tom

actually it's for all 82-88's ... I can post links to the evidence if you want...

I'll just have to bear with it for now tho until the money's free-er

I'll just open another thread about locking the control positions tho... having them 'floating' all the time is seriously annoying and counter productive...
