I've looked on the net to see if there are any tutorials for animated water. Does truespace offer this and if so where can I find a tutorial? Can I use particles plugin? I've seen where some have used metalball to do this.

I have not tried this yet..but you might be able to use the cloth motion and the right set up to make waves on the workspace side...not sure about ripples though. There is dynawave that does that.It works on the modelspace side.

hmmm here's something to try for cloth...


but it will require scripting and LE; i.e. procedural animation...


add an plane, quad divide a few times, apply cloth to it


add some spheres, below the cloth, but between the cloth and the ground plane.


Script these balls to move up and down in z


start physics, start script (needs a timer), balls move up and down, interacting with cloth.


Worth a shot.


Any other ideas?

You can also animate a displacement map via script. That will probably produce the best results.

You would just need to hook it up to the displacement bitmap input instead of the diffuse bitmap input. Then you could load a series of displacement images into the animated texture script and keyframe them.

The HDRI course under reflection chapter has scene to show how to make water but chapter is not specific for this though. You might want to try that out. Now that is a rendered solution using bumpmaps or AVI file of actual water in this case. Animating the bumpmap in modeler using either individual frames or AVI file can do the trick. For WorkSpace side I am working on a Water shader myself and I am sure others are too.

Frootee could you not make your plane, give it the cloth attributes and then add the fans to alternate speed and timing and make it wave..flag like.

Before I posted this i was thinking about using a cloth plane. What I thought about tonight was using a plane, fix some corners and have wind blow in two directions and possibly add another plane on top of it. another way would be to make a water enviroment the size of the plane and set the cloth plane on top with the wind blowing over it.

I am new to this program and to 3D for the most part. I played around with a simple program for a few years, but limited in what it can do.

Dele's suggestion is probably your best bet since you can't render/keyframe cloth animation yet. But it'll be cool to see what you come up with. :)

This is something (a plugin for TS) I haven't used for a while. I enjoyed it because:

1. It's a free demo

2. It makes animated water (and cloth-like objects) (ripples, waves, flags, etc.)

3. It's so much fun and easy to use!
