When I run trueSpace 7.6 in Windows Vista 64-bit, it shows up as a 32-bit process in task manager.

Any ideas?

Yeah, tS is a 32 bit program...;)

trueSpace is not a 64 bit application :)

It runs on multicores etc, but it is a 32 bit app still.

I was under the impression from the FAQ's that it was a 64-bit process...

Not at all - the FAQ says it will run under 64 and 32 bit versions of an OS, which it does (some software will not run on a 64 bit OS at all, so that is an issue). However, tS itself is only available as a 32 bit app, just one that runs well under either 32 or 64 bit OS'es.

If any of the FAQ wording is unclear, let me know and maybe we can tidy it up :)

PS - here it is

"

• Will trueSpace7.6 work with 64 and 32 bit systems?

It will, both in terms of hardware and operating system.

"

In other words, it runs well on a 64 bit processor, and on a 64 bit OS. As noted, some applications will not run on 64 bit at all. However the FAQ doesnt say tS itself is 64 bit.

Maby you should change the FAQ to make that a bit more clear:

• Will trueSpace7.6 work with 64 and 32 bit systems?

While TrueSpace7.6 is a 32 bit application, it will run in both systems in terms of hardware and operating system.

Also of note is that Roman announced a while back (before the MS buyout) that TrueSpace 8.0 will be available as 64-bit. So fingers are crossed for the future. ;)

Hopefully we'll be able to get VRay in 64-bit as well. :D

as long as I don't have to upgrade to vista and can keep using XP, I will be happy.

The only trouble with that is that you wont have any DirectX 10 functionality which will hopefully also come with tS 8...

I agree, DX10 would add a lot of power to TrueSpace's already powerful HLSL scripting and DX shader capabilities. :D

MS has stated fairly clearly that in the future they are committed to 64 bit architecture - sooner or later 32 bit systems and applications will be obsolete. Given the rate of technological advance I'd expect it to be sooner!

I had posted a problem about 2 months back about a rendering slowdown with all of the versions of trueSpace when rendering a scene I had created...

I never quite figured it out... but what I do know, is that it still exists even in tS 7.6.

What had been happening, was my 32-bit single core machine was rendering faster then my 64-bit quad core machine...

Now call me crazy but I actually took a stopwatch and created a complete generic scene with a 128 sided sphere (each scene was made in each version of tS and had same viewing angle; 640x480; normal FFAA with threshold of 0.2) and on my 32-bit, tS5 got 3.5 seconds and the demo of tS7.5 got 3.5 seconds... Now here is the tricky part...

The exact same scene on my 64-bit machine (which is still ~100 MHz faster in each core) rendered the same geometry and settings at 7.5 seconds and 9.25 seconds respectfully...

Does anyone know what is causing this?

I am pretty sure it's not the TLB bug... and I am thinking it is either tS as a 32-bit process running in a 64-bit environment.... or something else....

I originally discovered it while I was rendering using the glass shader, and that was when I originally posted the problem... Just recently I made the above test to confirm the same problem with FFAA...

it is possible that a 32bit program runs slower in a 64bit environment.

Personally I can't tell for sure there I use mainly CG programs optimized for 64 but I heard that. It's still a good option to have 32 and 64bit OS on disc.

P.S.: you run vista64 with 2gig ram? Respect :)

my vista drains nearly 2gig at startup. I'm glad that I have 8gig installed but only 2 is imho to less for a ressource intensive OS like vista.

Yeah, but I have also used other 3D programs too (ex: 3DS Max 8; Lightwave 9) and they don't have this problem... and come to think of it... neither of those are 64-bit apps... at least not the copies I've used...

In addition, Vista doesn't even come close to using 70% of the total physical memory... and that's even with tS rendering (I will admit I don't help the matter though... as I have on average at any given time another 100 processes running in the background; 45 of which are vista)
