Well here's another WIP that's actually part of another WIP!

As many of you know I've been working on a scene (see the "Stonewalls" thread in the WIP's forum) which I've momentarily put aside as I wanted to build a sailing ship to put in that scene. Weeellll... here it is. I was unable to limit myself to a small, low-poly ship and when I'd finished building it I just HAD to put it in a scene all of it's own.

Of course, once I had a ship I had to have a crew... this forced me to confront my personal issues with tS bones as I needed to pose the crew. Long story but I finally managed to rig a character using an original skeleton and (after several crashes, false starts and one scene that just refused to re-open) I'm happy to say I've got a result I'm happy with and I've developed a workable workflow for posing my characters for use in still images.

Here are some of the results which I'm offering up for feedback, criticism, praise etc. You'll have to look closely to see the posed characters but they're in there;) .

Note:HUGE thanks to Visu for a great link to an excellent resource.

This is tS 6.6... What do you think?

Finally, where are all the WIP's from you new tS7 owners?

Arrgh! You're supposed to comment on the boat modelling - the water is just a bunch of planes! No modelling, just planes  !!

Right! I'm over it now Bill ;) . I'm sorry but I don't recall where I got the original water from I've had it for so long. It's a load of planes (80 of them edge to edge - you could probably use 1 subdivided plane). The texture is a simple colour shader and the Mirror reflectance shader.

The 'secret' is in the bump shaders. The first layer of bump uses the TLF Bump Shader from The Logic Factory. This is a procedural bump and takes lots of tweak/render/tweak/render to get 'right'. Then there is another layer of bump (actually using no bump at all) that is alpha-masked using a high res cloud texture to give some variety to the procedural bump of the first layer. This is supposed to simulate wind patterns - I think it works quite well.

The final component is of course the lighting.

HTH

EDIT: Oh yeah, the foamy bits in the bottom image are postwork - sorry, I should have mentioned that.

Thanks for the explanation. The model looks great. Although I think your first mate could use a little more protein in his diet. I think the boat needs a little more ballast. It appears to be riding pretty high in the water. Did you use a picture of an actual junk as a reference or did you just make it up? Either way I think it is very good.

Above all else, congrats on getting a character rigged. Maybe you will pass on this new found knowledge eh?

I like the boat. It looks like it belongs in a story. What is the boats name?

And yah, where are all the tS7 WIPS?

Thank you for taking the time to comment folks.

Bill: A combination of reference pictures of both real and model junks with my own liberal and artistic input was used to model this although I had a pretty good idea in my mind how I wanted it to look.

Naes: The ship is called "Red Courage" - the Chinese ideogram on the side is the symbol for courage. It is intended to be part of a story. I've been slowly building and gathering resources for a pictorial fantasy story - there is an over-riding connecting theme behind most of my work. The ship itself won't play a big part in the story but the characters (actually secondary characters) will. I can't say too much about it as it's all still coming slowly together.

Visu: Thanks for the kind words, and thanks again for that great link to the sky resources.

To be honest I was hoping for a few more: "This-is-great-you-should-enter-it-in-the- monthly-contest-it-will-win!" types of comment:( . Oh well, it's not like it's hard gong back to the drawing board - I love playing with and learning about tS.

Don't let the lack of posts deter you from entering this in the monthly contest. Sometimes things don't always get a lot of response, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's not getting noticed. I often see things I like, but don't always comment because I'm in a hurry or some other odd reason.

I think this image looks good! The top four images especially have a nice mood to them. Nice job Wizard! :)

Hi Délé

Thanks for the cheery Comments. Rest assured I will not let a lack of posts deter me – I’m assuming everyone is too busy rendering killer art of their own to comment. I also assume there is not too much ‘wrong’ with my pictures if no-one is making suggestions on how to improve it!!

And thanks for the supportive words trueBlue. Most appreciated.

The boat looks great, but you really need to tone down the blue of that guy's trousers. & his shirt looks too bright as well.

Fantastic work Wizard! I'm very impressed! I love the style of the boat and especially the sails, they are a perfect representation of an oriental look. And what an interesting cabin on the back of the boat! (er, ship? - I never can remember what's correct in naval terms).

Of course you should enter it! It's a beautifully constructed model, and fantastic render too. (I'm also very impressed by the water - may seem simple to you, but you still have to know how to set it up to get the results.)

Bravo!!

If I had to offer 1 crit it would be to find a more dramatic angle. I will send you a private message with a pic as an example of what I am talking about.

Good luck with the entry!

Hey Stephen glad tosee i'm not the only one with the crash syndrome and render syndrome. I was quite i'll for a while, but as you said it finally comes good.

You got a great ship here by my standard and reckon it's worth the effort you've obviously put in, top job keep it up. :)
