Hello, I am posting here to ask the following about my human characters for a simulation I want to make someday. It will involve people interacting with objects, like in real life, except it'll be more like the anime/manga style for the characters.

1. Should I make separate models in which I animate them separately (like clothes, legs, arms, head, all animated separately for the purpose of putting them together in the programming stage of the game, so the user can customize the character's clothing, skin color, eye color etc.)?

Or

2. Should I just make a whole bunch of different versions of the model with different clothes, eyes, skin, etc, and animate each human separately with all the pieces glued together?

Edit: I want the user to be able to cusomize the character in the game, like in The Sims 2, or at least like The Sims 1.

Thanks again!

I would guess using the same skeleton would let you load and save the animations. So long as the same skeleton with same joints etc was used, the animation should work on the skeleton, and anything attached would just follow along.

So you could attach different models and clothes to the skeleton (or a copy of it) and reuse the animations in the same way you are reusing the skeleton, figures, etc.

Not my area of expertise as noted in similar thread, but that would be my expectation.

Thanks!
