My 3D game will be an adventure game.. something on the lines of Grim Fandango, the hard part was a decent user system, inventory etc which is now sorted, so like a MMORPG you can get away with a lot, anything pretty you rely on cut scenes ;)
Me and another guy did a Lassie/Flash game for the HP Lovecraft Commonplace book Project and within 2 days of the blogger sites getting hold of it my bandwidth just went half way through the month, luckily our entry was a download version hosted elsewhere
I'll shut up now i don't wanna hijack Eagles thread :) |

Ah, of course for hosting that can add up to an issue - I was thinking on bandwidth as in "demand at any one point in time". Adding up "demand over the month" and comparing that to your host's limits still could be an issue, even if there is less data piped around per client connected, with an adventure or MMORPG the idea is that people stay connected for long long periods and spend a lot of time in your world, so it would add up.
And of course the more succesful your game, the more people connect, and the more of an issue it becomes. That would be interesting to know about, what the current plans are for how to host the game. Apologies for thinking of the wrong thing there bandwidth wise :)
There is the download issue for install too, since a MMORPG has all that stuff on the client, they generally see large install files, for the large "pro" games, these are 5 to 10Gb to download, I would imagine it would be easy to get to 1Gb even with an indie MMORPG, and that has to count in to having enough monthly hosting bandwidth to support those who want to install it.
So I guess there are questions there after all! :)

I actually have been thinking a lot about this lately. I’m going to have to use
a dedicated T1 line but I have a friend who told me I could use his. I do a lot
of work for him so he will let me hook up a server to his network, well I
should say let Mike hook up a server, that’s really more his thing than mine.
But anyway, that should be a big enough pipe to start with… I hope:p

I think if i ever do another online game , i would run my own server, i was lucky, my present hosting belongs to a friend so he's upgrade the bandwidth twice without charging extra, i know guys who have had some nasty suprises when the next bill came in

The gameplay of Witch Gate is a lot like that of Lineage 2, You
have to build your toon but the game is small. Thanks for all the kind words guys,

Hey, Vicky, a bit off topic, but I'm looking for an older version of tS that will work on my comp. Do you have a version older than 7.6, and if so, would you be willing to pass it on? |

Hi bigbart1mill,
I do have older versions of Truespace but I want to keep them all, sorry~ You
might post a blog about it in the "Blogs" section of the forum.

I've started to build the Warfshire level; this level leads you into a massive dungeon instance.

Tell us how you really feel Mr 3D, no really, don't hold back or anything....
@Vickie:
I like the art quite a bit on the "toons", but the environments seem to contrast them quite a bit, hi res characters with low detail environments. You ma want to revisit the modeling on them a bit.
-Keep up the good work. |

I agree Nowherebrain, I think that in the final release I will make a new set of actor models that are not so high detail as these so the game blends more. Thanks for your input! Its these kind of comments that really help me~

I wouldn't downgrade the character. Some of the environment edges are a little sharp... but overall, pretty good. I think that an interested client would rather see a more realistic character to play with, rather than sacrifice the character's quality because you think it might blend in better. I know that alot of work goes into creating the scenes already made. If there was a way to round-off some of the structural edges without eating up too many bytes, I think that would help. Otherwise, I definitely would NOT downgrade any character............just my opinion.;) |

In many ways I agree, I try to develop with the idea that 20-30 fps will equal 40-60 fps upon completion of a game based on the duration of the dev cycle...and the models are looking nice probably 2000-3500 polys(good density I think) maybe turning window textures int poly based windows and adding some bricks sticking out of the walls here and there could help...sometimes it does not require much....but this is YOUR game not ours...you have the vision and sometimes people don't "get it"...I understand this more and more when I am working on a project. |
