just a teaser of my layers system, it has been around for quite some time as script but not released. I wanted to code parts that didn't work as well as I wanted and that is going great. :) Working on the layers obj panel now, this will let you change layers quickly. (It's above the object info panel in screenshot)

Very Cool Stan!

I'm glad to see this getting close to completion!

I really like how we it looks like the Model side layers system, judging by the layer colors in the upper left hand corner of the screenshot.

Now we will have 2 Layers solutions: Dele's, and now Stan's. I think that's good because it offers users 2 different approaches. Some folks will like one approach, while others will prefer the other. Sweet!

Another thing I really like is, the highlight color of each layer is clearly indicated on the outline of each cube in your scene.

Very nice!

Stan,

Can we move objects from one layer to the next?

Can we merge two layers into one?

Can we list all layers and their contents?

yes..its almost like model layers except you can't move layer icons or delete them..you can copy or delete the contents of any layer though..;)

This teaser has something appaling in it :o

I mean, the layers are available in tS since years and nobody can today envisage any serious work without that feature.
And when Stan announces that he is working hard on a Layer solution for Workspace, which is the main interface for the new 5 million downloaders of tS but that lacks layers, there is only 3 of us, forum members, that demonstrate their joy and encouragement ! That's short.

Okay, as an active member, I'm probably the first to blame :p
For my defence, I can say that since I don't use Workspace, all the new tools for Workspace have minor interest to me. I am glad to see more tools being developed for this side of tS though.

But what about the rest ?
There's 5 millions of tS downloads but only 2 594 members posting on this forum, and 256 active members. And among those 256, just 3 have posted in Stan's thread for a week.
This represents 1.17%.
Are 98.83% of trueSpace (WS side) pure hobbyists that don't need the layers feature ?

Come on guys, drop a word or two in this thread !
Tell Stan his news is making you happy... or I will start to belive that 98.83% of tS users are still pure Modeler users that don't care about WS tools

This news is making me happy :) I admit I never used layers on the Model side either, but I can see their use, and know some people rely on them and couldn't do without them.

And I'm glad as I love to see folks develop for tS, whatever the tool! So that adds to liking hearing the news about this specific tool.

HTH!

I agree that only a small percentage of users and downloaders are in forum and active. It is what it is though and we manage to have a good community that is both vocal and willing to share their works.

I do notice that we are receiving more registrations now than in past (Pre-aquisition). Traffic is slowly increasing as well. Those who do contact me regarding forums and registration and such are most complimentary about the affair: free ts, forums, tuts and such.

And of course folks like Gord Stanton, who has been tinkering with the layers for workspace, for quite some time now. They are realizing the potential of trueSpace beyond what the developers have provided by default. Room-to-grow is my term for it. Roman and the developers and indeed Microsoft folks realize that the frame-work is in place for many enhancements. The developers really enjoy seeing such items develop. They just don't have time to do everything that can be done with the frame-work without stopping work on the frame-work. So it is the frame-work that sets the stage for "Layers" and such. Once word gets around about such capabilities and functionality, we could very well see more.

The whole scenario is just way-cool in my mind:jumpy: go Gord go :jumpy:

A layer system is a very necessary feature if you work on large models.

Its great that we have these options now for workspace.

I would have droped a word if i had something to look at hands on.

I never download without saying thank you.

So we were just waiting for it.Things that I can do I post myself like Hdrs and textures etc.I´m just not good at coding or making these things like these plugs... i would be active at producing them. I would start with an object format importer because apart from layers thats one of the most wanted.

But thanks again for the layers much appreciated !:)

Been away for a few days so didn't see this. Excellent work Stan. Is this (or can it) be linked to the workspace scene editor?

Paul, don't really know, do you mean the WS scene view panel?

basicly it just puts objects on layers that can be accessed through either of two layers panels. one is a buddy panel that will go above object info panel in stack by default to add layer functionality(layer no and changing to another layer) and selecting in scene from droplist, the other is the layer info panel( almost like the modelside one).

In the same icon set as the 3D windows/stack etc. is the scene view icon (basically a workspace version of the scene editor, albeit lacking some functions). In this you can see all the objects in the scene and it would be great if they could also be identified by layer colours.

I understand that this is quite a jump from what you have though...just a thought.

Looking forward to trying this out...

working without layers is one of the reason i can't use the workspace for my job. Some objets are very difficult to select. With layer, i can see only a part of the scene. Thank for the developpers. I hope to see this plugin soon. :)

FGS!! Yes, I am one of the 98.83%, and I am not even a pure hobbyist yet. I am still prowling around looking for the "right" software for _me_.

I acknowledge and respect _ANY_ work contributed by users, but I am not in a position to judge/value.

That said, I return to my lurking position.

I think there are lots of people out there like me, who barely post here but would be very greatful for that plugin. In tS6.6 I heavily used and still use Layers, some scenes simply couldn´t be handled without them. So count me in as one "desperatly waiting for that plugin" user , it´s a feature that is most needed for artists who like their complex scenes 1) organized and 2) at manageable framerates.

The idea behind a layer system is also to aply something to a whole layer.

I got from Deles Layerz plugin that you cant aply a physical atribute to all the

objects in one layer as well as aplying a shader to all objects in one layer..

Could that be made possible ?

Rayman, this layers system will be similar to the one on modelside so no it won't do that. It maybe possible but that's beyond the intent of my original system. At this point I'm just trying to put into code what I did in script with any improvements that may bring.

A scene editorview like modelside was not in the plan. Altering the workspace one, if that is even possible with sdk is beyond my knowledge at this point, sorry Paul.

Down the road my skill with the sdk can only improve so never say never but in this my first project with c++ sdk go easy on me.;)

I look forward to seeing how you do the layers Stan. My script was really just intended to tide folks over until proper layers were implemented, so it will be nice to see your plug-in released. It's also nice to see someone else blazing trails with the SDK. :)
