Well, it finally arrived...the new revamped 3D World mag. First impressions are that it looks very similar albeit larger than normal (taller that is) and pretty thick. However, on opening you see that it is a very different magazine.

Perhaps it is because the new 3D Artist magazine is so, well visually appealing, but this mag seems very academic; lots of text.

However, there is a lot in this and it is a fine read.

On the disc as promised is Realsoft 3D version 5; full edition. Models, textures and tutorials. Plenty of articles and some real talent in here: Ray Harryhausen, Richard Williams, Jan Pinkava and Kyle Balda.

There really is almost too much stuff to list and I need to read this in more depth, definitely an improvement on the old issue and this is well worth ordering.

Anyway, a quick rundown:

Realtime rendering, GDC09, Ten best animated shorts, Festivals, galleries, portfolios etc. etc.

Best of all though is the email of the month which wins a nifty prize: a signed copy of 'The Art and Science of Digital Compositing' by Ron Brinkmann. Some guy talking about Buddyworldbooks....:p

Not sure what he will do with that book though...

Next month, a feature on Pixar with a choice of two unique rendered covers.

Might be a good time to consider subscribing as you would get a DVD full of tutorials as well as full versions of Carrara 6 pro and Hexagon 1.2.

And did I mention that the letter of the month says' made completely in trueSpace' twice!!

:D

Nope, it's there alright. Gets half a page as well, the images on the top and the letter at the bottom with the website link printed. Not sure why they feel the need to say it was all made in trueSpace twice but who is complaining?

:D

Give me a while and I will scan it in...;)

They say in this issue that they have some new delivery routes which should speed up subscription abroad. Good news is that subscibers get that DVD I mentioned earlier in the next issue.

Been a long day and I am too tired to read the issue but first impressions feel more like a journal than a magazine...probably a good thing given their competition from 3D Artist.

This is really cool, well done. :)

I have no idea why 3d is shunned by the kids book world, either, it really makes no sense in a Pixar world.

It's probably political to some extent, as I doubt many kids writers would have 3d skills, and hence wouldn't want their world turned upside down by something new that threatens their ability to work.

Well your story made this issue so how bad can it be? Maybe the article will finally open some eyes.

I can't wait to buy my issue and tell everyone, " I almost know this guy!!!" Autograph copies would be cool too.;)

This is well deserved, congratulations Paul.

Great News Paul! And very well deserved. With your mention in 3D World and your gallery riding high on the 3D Artist's website, your certainly ramping up your profile. :)

Intresting to hear your comments on the mags content changing direction and the possibillty of it being caused by the new 3D Artist mag. And to further heat up the competition, Nvidia are launching their own 3D mag in June. So 3D artists are being spoilt rotten at the moment although I can't see the market sustaining all three.

Congratulations splinters, recognition well deserved and long over due.

I well imagine that book publishers are resisting 3D images, because they are gun shy of DVD competition. Maybe...maybe not...

3D on DVD and other video formats do quite well. Perhaps they are awaiting for a 3D electronic book that's affordable...dunno.

Anyways, do cling tightly to your rising star, the ride can get bumpy. :)

Now that is interesting that Nvidia is going to have a 3d mag for artists. Actually kinda smart as far as I am concerned, get the respect of the artists and the artists will bring in droves of folks to Nvidia.

There is alot going on in the graphics industry and ATI/AMD, Nvidia and maybe Intel will drive it. Really the tools of tomorrow are going to be many folds faster and more powerful then what we have today for rendering. We are looking at affordable (less then $400) processing power of 2 trillion floating point operations per second and more on the next generation GPUs. ATI's next GPU is romoured to do 2 Trillion and Nvidia 3 Trillion. What benefits greatly from GPU massive parallel pipeline design is rendering, the type of rendering that is normally associated with cpu's. So having folks using this new power will ensure next generation of hardware will actually get used. Time for alot of Artists to ride the tidel wave and hold onto your hats.

Now what Microsoft is doing to harness that tremendous amount of power of GPU's is an utter mystery ;).

Good to see you in 3D world, Paul. It is an important point to know for 3D illustrators that publishers are hesitating about it. I see a good deal of 3D in my line of work (pharmaceutical) and I also see much illustration work in newspapers here being done in very good 3D. I guess it is a matter of barking up the trees some more, although I know you have done your share.

Thanks for the update on 3D world. I just received the 3D artist by mail, which is certainly a nice addition. I will look out for the new 3D world in the bookstores.

Georg

Thanks for the positive comments guys. As you point out, I have been pushing my 'digital' illustrations for years and it is good to get an article in such a high profile mag. It may not be a feature as such but it has illustrations and the weblink so it may get a few more hits.

More importantly, it gives something money can't buy; a recommendation by the magazine. While they don't actually endorse it, they have checked it out and seen fit to publish this.

Gotta admit, I haven't given the prize a thought; the feature is prize enough for me. Pretty sure this should serve as a nice advert for trueSpace as well! If Caligari still had the prize for the best exposure of trueSpace I would of thought this would have clinched it...;)

Now to get some new artwork in there (and on here).

Ironically, the next issue of 3D Artist is due any day so I will let you know if it can meet the standards of issue 1. I am hoping that some of my artwork may make their gallery and get some trueSpace lovin going on!

A bit off-topic for 117 but I've been reading through issue 115 and on page 62 there's an image from the tv show Primeval. Anyway, the actor - it looks to me like Ian Somerhalder from Lost Season 1 and also Smallville series 3 but it doesn't mention who it is - I guess not important.

Anyone have any ideas

Answers on a postcard please. The winner shall receive several bananas.

;)Well,

On the disc as promised is Realsoft 3D version 5; full edition.

:D

Splinters, I would like to know more than your opinion to Realsoft 3D, which came complete this edition No. 117, and that he complete certain functions of Truespace. I believe that many people here use more than a tool ...

Brotherx;

not familair with the guy youmention, but looking up a few pics on google I'm guessing that it may have been Andrew-Lee Potts, who plays Connnor on Primeval - he's had a haircut for the latest series and looks a bit tidier now... gosh, how much of a nerd does that make me sound...:o It's a fun show though, even if it's daft....

Hi Iceman / Lads,

As it happens for years on and off I have used Realsoft 3D up to version 5. I did not upgrade to version 6 and now 7 ( near release ) because the Character Animation toolset is sadly lacking. Im not sure if version 7 will sort this out, version 6 did not in my opinion. It is said version 7 will have full FBX import / export ( inc bones etc ).

Outside of Char Anim REALSOFT is a very capable tool. Its got SDS / POLY Modelling - very solid. Uses Wireframe / OGL workspace. Id say its nav is not too far off MAYA. Needless to say it has supported NGONS for ages ( before alot of other apps ). RS as did Lightwave - came from the Amiga Days.

Its texturing system is very powerful - it uses a shading language called VSL. If you are technically minded you will get alot out of the advanced VSL. Literally build shaders from zero.

Another top thing in Realsoft is its RENDER ENGINE - I think excellent. Stomps on Truespaces own render engine in my opinion. It has GI, Caustics - all the goodies.

The userbase - relatively speaking - is small but friendly. Why not drop in over at the IRC - channel #realsoft3d - on Quakenet. Small few of us there. Gets a bit more animated in the late PM. Ask questions if you wish. My IRC name is bobthe3Dbuilder.

For some more tutes and that - http://www.realsoft.info/

The main site is very quiet, not updated much lately - http://www.realsoft.com/

By the way - in and out of Truespace should not pose a problem as all the usual import / export filters are there inc a very robust OBJ filter.

Hope this lot helps

Aidan

;)Hello, friend Aidan !!

Thank you for your interest in replying to my question about Realsoft. You explained very well the main features of this software and really he has great qualities. Definitely worth buying this magazine and have a good model and a renderer. Today there is a market that looks for very large studies with high costs, where the guy who likes to make art in those off hours at home can not buy the expensive programs made by Autodesk. A great example: discontinuation of the XSI Foundation (U.S. 495.00) which had powerful tools at a price very friendly and may never return. Maybe they thought to gain in the amount of users, not the exclusion of the vast majority of small artists, we would win. Thanks to those magazines that sometimes carry programs that many of us can not buy! This is called digital inclusion.

Sorry I did not reply Iceman, Have been real busy lately...:o

First thought after running it for 30 mins or so; it is quite like old (model) tS in its workflow and one of the few programs where I have been able to make something and navigate around with relative ease. Might be worth looking into further....

....if only I had any time...:(

After taking Splinter's advise I checked out the new 3DArtist Magazine. In the first issue there is a special link for U.S.subscribers to get a special rate. This is cheaper then if you subscribe using their website. They don't tell you the exact amount you will be billed in U.S. funds until later.
I received the Bill today (since they had to convert to US Dollars) which included an International Service Fee.
$75.34 for 13 issues
$2.26 Serv. Fee
Total $77.60
$5.95 for each Issue...CHEAP!!!
This looks like a fantastic bargain so far for a first class Magazine.
My subscription will start with the 3rd issue so I still must buy the second one at the book store when it hits. ($15.00 each issue at the stands!)
If you can't find the first issue and want to subscribe let me know.
